What was the inspiration for this story? / Where did it come from?

As a fan of science fiction film and Westerns, I always wanted to tackle a good old-fashioned alone-in-space story in some form or another; it’s both an inherently horrific premise and a chance to explore character. Novella seemed like the perfect length to do so. The AI was a given; the motets snuck in sideways.
