CHAPTER TWENTY

Bex folded up the letter she had been writing for the last two days and tucked it under the small pot on her kitchen table, running her fingers over the edges before standing up and feeling nerves dance up and down her body. It was nearly word for word what she had written last time.

She loved him.

She had then and she did now.

She was going to tell him what she had wanted to really say when walking back from Alfonso’s. Before she chickened out and grouped him with all the other men she had known in her life. Before she had doubted him for a hot second.

She was going to ask him if they could go back to how they had been last time, practically living with each other. She was even going to ask if she could move in with him. After all, he had wanted her to before.

“God, I’m nervous,” she said out loud, shaking her hands out in front of her like she had just washed them.

They’d barely spoken since he had last been to her house the previous night, but he had texted her and asked if he could come around in the late afternoon as Amy was at a birthday party.

She’d asked him how it had gone with Sam but he hadn’t really answered, avoiding her questions easily and she thought maybe he was waiting to talk to her in person about it.

The buzzer to her front door sounded and she jumped, quickly running over to it and letting Daniel in. She opened the door to her flat, unable to simply sit still and wait for him to knock, and waited to see his head appear as he walked up the staircase. As she spotted him she felt her stomach dip and her chest tighten.

Why had she doubted him?

He was different.

With him, everything was easy.

Everything was safe.

She didn’t have to be as cold with him, she didn’t have to be so abrasive. She could let her walls down and be herself. He would look after her just as she wanted to look after him.

Daniel looked impeccable. As always.

Smart suit, great hair and when his eyes found hers she saw them smile. Then she saw them drop and take in her outfit. She noted the nervous dip of his Adam’s apple and the fact when his eyes met hers again, they were laced with desire.

“Come in,” Bex said, stepping to the side.

Without saying anything he nodded, his side brushing her front as he passed and she felt her insides clench even more. His words from the previous evening rung through her mind and she felt her skin flush.

There was something electric and heavy in the atmosphere. It was unmissable and as the door shut and Daniel turned to face Bex she saw he was using every bit of self-control he could not to reach for her. His jaw was locked, his eyebrows narrowed and his nostrils flared.

Fuck that.

She took two confident strides forwards and captured
