From his crouched position on the bridge, he peered at the aircraft as it swept by and flew away from his sight. He kept muttering to himself.
âThatâs a small one! Must be a recon drone. Do ya see what ya done, ya bastards!â his fist clenched.
He hastened and crab-walked to the other side of the bridge, peered through the safety glass, searched the dull, gray sky and found the drone turning in the distance, a mere speck against it. He aimed his rifle at the speck, then quickly ran onto the deck, using deck equipment as cover, and located both robots and deactivated them from hauling bodies, placing them in standby-charging mode. He then withdrew inside the bridge and waited, wary, watching.
He heard the drone circle for about an hour, occasionally peering at it as the sound increased and it passed over the ship. He noted that someone was remotely accessing the shipâs robotic systems in an attempt to find out why the ship was still active. Certain systems were then powered down by someone, remotely, including the fusion reactor. This frightened Ben.
Ben was relieved when, for some reason, the power was turned back on, leaving the shipâs fusion reactor running. He reasoned that they must be thinking about saving the ship and possibly reusing it in future. He watched until he saw the drone dip its wing, turn, and head away from the base. He watched it go in the general direction of what had to be the Australian base at Adelaide, clear across the continent. Ben only turned away when the speck disappeared in the distance.
Ben emerged from the bridge. The first thing he did was to return to the robots to reactivate them. He froze just before he switched the first deckbot back on. He had left them in âstandby-chargeâ but this one was in âstandbyâ which was the level just below active. He checked the other robot, nearby, and found the same setting.
âA bloody trap! They left them this way to send a signal upon activation! The bastards are looking for anyone left in order to kill them! To kill me....â He shook his clenched fist in the direction of Adelaide.
â...Well, not Benjamin Gunner you wonât, you bastards. Ya think Iâm a dill? A bloody sheepshagger? Iâll just go get the other bots to work the job. Ha! Enjoy your holiday, you two.â
Ben did this and then went to a point on land where he could view the runways. The conclusion was obvious. They had not landed because the runways were either blocked by runway and construction bots or the one that they had used to flee the base was not level because of snow drifts.
âIâll leave it just like that, you bastards,â he screamed into the sky. âGod saw and knows what you did. God saved me to bear witness and to punish you one day!â
The additional robot activation and programming gave him an idea. He went back onto the base while his new âfriendsâ went about cleaning the ship.
