Making love to Tyler hadnât solved anything. It had only proved to her that his touch was addictive. Her compulsion to see him was intense, beginning the moment she opened her eyes to the bright sunshine spilling across her bed. When heâd brought her home the night before, sheâd maintained a sophisticated, nonchalant attitude. Sheâd kissed him good night at the door, trying not to let her anguish show. Sheâd done fine, until heâd caught her arm and stopped her as she was turning to go inside.
âLacey,â heâd asked hesitantly. âdo ⦠do you like children?â
âOf course. I think thatâs why I love my dolls so much. Why?â
âSo do I,â he said firmly. âThere was a time, once, when I thought that having a child would be wonderful but â¦â His voice trailed off. Heâd looked at her for a long minute. âI knew something special was happening between us.â A bittersweet smile came to his face. He kissed her once more and left.
She should have been happy. It should have given her hope that he was serious about a commitment. She thought of Callie and the child she would bear Matt. Could Tyler know about Callieâs child? No, Callie had said that she and Matt had kept their joy to themselves.
But Tylerâs words didnât reassure her, they only made her panic. Children? Could two people meet and learn to care for each other in so short a time? Lacey was afraid to call it love. She wasnât sure she knew what love wasânot yet.
Lacey threw her feet over the edge of her bed and forced herself to sit up. Her body gave her gentle reminders of what she and Tyler had shared the night before. She sighed. The pain she was feeling was mental, not physical. She wasnât used to dealing with emotional decisions. All her life sheâd had to be the practical one, making decisions based on clear-cut needs and demands. For once in her life could she allow her heart to run free?
Lacey showered and wandered down to the kitchen, dabbing at her forehead in the sticky summer heat. Pinned to the refrigerator was a note from her parents explaining that they wouldnât be home till early afternoon. From the barn at the back of the house she heard the chipping sound of a mallet. Mr. Spragg, she thought. Giving a ladylike tug to the legs of her cut off jeans and the hem of her faded T-shirt, Lacey slid her feet into a pair of old flip-flops she kept by the screened porch, and ran out into the bright morning sunlight.
âMr. Spragg?â
The round little man lowered his mallet and slid his glasses to the top of his bare, pink head.
âMorning, Lacey. What do you think of my duck?â
Lacey studied the chunk of wood with its gouged-out sections. âThis is what we were looking for the other day? This thing is a duck?â The words slipped out before she could mask her astonishment.
âWell, not really. But itâs
