CHAPTER 12
TIM
Tim stretched out on his grassy perch and let out a long yawn before popping the very last bite of his ice cream cone into his mouth. He grinned as he chewed. Heâd be willing to bet pretty much anything the others hadnât enjoyed a second breakfast of ice cream! Heâd done his best to make it last as long as humanly possible - but had then made the fatal mistake of biting off the bottom of the cornet â promptly dribbling coffee-flavoured ice cream right down the front of his coat.
Who cared though? There was no one to see him â and right now he was in his element. Fresh air and peace and quiet? He was practically in seventh heaven!
Wiping his fingers on his jeans to get rid of any remaining traces of ice cream, Tim opened the guidebook resting in his lap and flipped through the pages. Thanks to Stella and Frank, heâd easily found his way to the stream.
If the book was to be believed â the river shouldnât be here at all. Instead, he should currently be sitting with his back propped up against a large oak tree - somewhere in the middle of an ancient forest.
The complete lack of trees here was the one thing Tim couldnât quite get used to. Brumeldsay was windswept and wild too - but it did have some of the most beautiful patches of ancient forest heâd ever seen â as documented by several photographs in the Crumcarey guidebook!
Tim searched through the pages until he found them again.
Crumcareyâs ancient forests cover at least a third of the island.
âErm⦠nope!â he laughed, glancing up from the page and staring around at the scenery. It was more like a windswept, coastal moorland than a forest.
Tim couldnât deny that Crumcarey was beautiful though â despite its lack of trees. The vast sky was marbled with storm clouds and the light was spectacular. Just like on Brumeldsay, the sun didnât climb too far above the horizon this early in the year. It simply peeped its head up, rolled along in a lazy arc and then disappeared to bed early.
The light was almost metallic - glittering golds, bronzes and silvers splashed here and there - creating shimmering rainbows whenever the clouds decided they were carrying too much weight and dropped their burden on the fields below.
It was incredible to be on this island after hearing stories about it since he was a little boy. Even though heâd never set foot on Crumcarey before this trip, the place was almost a part of his DNA. Heâd never dreamed heâd visit⦠especially not as an archaeology student with a job to do!
Not that he really had a job to do. Tim knew the professor had just made this task up simply to get rid of him while he focussed on the students who actually wanted to be archaeologists when they grew up. Tim was already grown up - not counting the dribble of ice cream down his front.
