Chapter 15

Beth could have stayed in the castle for the rest of her life quite happily. In the early hours of the morning after the wedding, she woke in Silas’s arms. Few words had been spoken after he’d led her up the stone staircase to his room and gently peeled the green velvet dress from a woman who was willing.

She had taken her pleasure slowly undoing the buttons beneath the ruffles of his shirt, pausing occasionally to run her fingers over the silken skin of his chest.

Now, in the breaking dawn fingers of pale light began to illuminate the massive bedroom, and she nestled against his warm body listening to him breathe quietly beside her. Her body still tingled and an incredible sense of wellbeing and mellowness enveloped her as he slept on.

And confidence. Confident that she had followed her heart and not her common sense for a change. A smile lifted her lips as she turned to the sleeping man beside her. A surge of unfamiliar feeling filled her chest and her eyes pricked from the intensity of the emotion as it ran through her.

Silas was a skilful and considerate lover and she’d felt more cherished than she ever had in her life. In the midst of a raging kiss, he’d paused and asked her if she was sure, and she had even wondered briefly if he was as keen as she was.

Beth smiled as she lifted her hand and ran it down his chest . . . she had to touch him; it was impossible to lie there and not put her hands on him. His skin was like satin, and warm and—

Firm fingers held hers and she looked up to a pair of smiling, sexy eyes.

‘If you do that you’ll end up in trouble.’ The husky voice sent a shiver down to those parts of her that were still tingling after a couple of hours of sleep.

‘Was that trouble we had before? Three times trouble?’ A giggle escaped her lips as he held her hand steady, away from the destination she’d been heading for. ‘I’ve never been in trouble before, but I must say I quite liked it.’

‘So you’re one of those good girls I’ve heard about then, I guess,’ Silas teased before he let go of her hand. He pushed himself up in the bed and leaned his head against the ornate timber bedhead and held up his arm so she could snuggle against him. ‘But I’m pleased to hear that.’ He leaned across and dropped a kiss on the top of her head and warmth suffused her. There was nothing sexual about it, just sheer affection, and Beth closed her eyes. There was no self-consciousness about being in his bed; no angst about what she would say or do.

‘Has anyone ever told you what beautiful hands you have?’

He picked up her hand again and examined her fingers in the half light. He held it high in front of them. ‘You have the fingers of a musician.
