PLANTAGE AND AMSTERDAM-OOST
PLANTAGE
BARS AND CAFÉS
CREA Café. Located within the University of Amsterdam’s city campus, this hidden gem of a café housed in a former diamond-cutting factory has been converted into a warm modern space with big windows and a huge canalside terrace. Think cheap and cheerful: affordably priced homemade soups, sandwiches, and beverages satisfy not only the multitude of students but the older crowd, too. During the academic year, Friday nights are host to the Easylaughs comedy troupe’s English-language improv show. Nieuwe Achtergracht 170, Plantage 020/525–1423 www.crea.uva.nl/cafe.php.
De Plantage. The neighborhood’s newest culinary addition has an old-world feel with a back terrace practically in Artis zoo, from which it leases its historic Art Nouveau home. A stunning, capacious hall catering to a more mature crowd, the bar offers an ample selection of wine by the glass, including alcohol-free prosecco. Plantage Kerklaan 36, Plantage 020/760–6800 www.caferestaurantdeplantage.nl.
Fodor’sChoice Hiding in Plain Sight (HPS). The speakeasy-esqe HPS is a properly indie cocktail mecca whose infamous rum-based concoction, “The Walking Dead,” has indeed left many locals limping away. High prices are compensated by almost familial service standards. Rapenburg 18, Plantage 06/2529–3620 www.hpsamsterdam.com.
AMSTERDAM-OOST
BARS AND CAFÉS
Bar Bukowski. This local hot spot in the up-and-coming East has a sunny corner terrace facing the Oosterpark and a weekend cocktail spot, Henry’s Bar, in an adjoining space—all invoking the spirit of its namesake, writer Charles Bukowski. Oosterpark 10, Amsterdam-Oost 020/370–1685 www.barbukowski.nl.
Brouwerij ’t IJ. Perched under a windmill on the eastern outskirts of the city is an evocative, if out-of-the-way, microbrewery where Kasper Peterson offers Natte, Zatte, Struis, Columbus, and other home brews to be enjoyed on the large terrace, weather permitting. Funenkade 7, Amsterdam-Oost 020/528–6237 www.brouwerijhetij.nl.
Canvas. Housed in a former newspaper building re-christened the Volkshotel, or People’s Hotel, Canvas offers splendid views over the city from its seventh-floor perch. The restaurant and cocktail bar are satisfying, and Club Canvas, although lacking that clubby feeling, is lauded for its progressive programming of live jazz, experimental house, hip-hop, indie, and so forth. The club is open Thursday–Saturday. Wibautstraat 150, Amsterdam-Oost 020/261–2110 www.volkshotel.nl.
BROWN CAFÉS
Café Hesp. A neighborhood classic since 1890, this inviting brown café with a huge terrace on the Amstel has an amazing selection of beer—including 29 on tap—and celebrates Oktoberfest like no other. Weesperzijde 130-131, Amsterdam-Oost 20/665–1202 www.cafehesp.nl.
