My mother once said that when she was pregnant with Brenda, it seemed that every woman she saw in the street was pregnant. Then she explained that when you are suddenly aware of something, you see things you hadn’t noticed before. This was how it was with Benny.

We shared our Benny clues with our neighbor Barbara Siegel. Halfway between my age and Laura’s, Barbara always wanted to play with us. She didn’t have many friends at the bungalow colony, maybe because she was the granddaughter of the owner and maybe because she was pudgy, wore glasses, and was nosy. When we had told her about Benny, she promised to poke around and ask questions from the more elderly renters. Days afterward, she knocked on my bedroom window at eight in the morning, and I slipped out the front door to meet her. We stopped at the Sun House gazebo and sat on the swinging couch.

“Listen Mandy, I couldn’t wait to tell you what I found.”

“What?”

“I’m not so sure, Mandy, maybe I shouldn’t give it to you.”

“What?” My heart was pounding.

“I found this in an old scrapbook that my grandfather had in the storage room,” Barbara said, reaching into her pocket and handing me a folded newspaper clipping. I opened it and saw the headline, “Local Boy Jumps to Death.” My breath caught in my throat. I read on:
