You are fat.

You are not a good ballplayer.

You are stupid.

You can’t . . . .

Your family is . . . .

Then discuss responses children might use in each situation and write them in the second column. These are some things students have told teachers that they have used with success.

Start with, “You have a right to your opinion, but I think my mom is the greatest.” (Acknowledging the bully will surprise him.)

One student would tell the bully, “You are stronger than I am and I do not want to fight because I do not want to get hurt.”

One fourth-grade girl would say, “If you say so.” A tactic another student used was to shrug her shoulders and say “Whatever” and then walk away. Walking away when there are other people in the vicinity stops the bullies, for if the bully chases the victim and starts a fight, the bully is the one in trouble.

Bullies are usually sneaky, especially if there are adults within eyesight. If the child hits the bully or shouts disclaimers, a fight will probably ensue and the bully will win. This strategy is not 100 percent foolproof, but it will help in many situations.
