A few weeks passed, and I had gotten a job at the local pharmacy. It’s funny how I went from being a street pharmacist to working at the pharmacy down the street. Things were going so well until I decided to visit my old neighborhood. I know curiosity killed the cat, but I had to find out what was going on in that area of town.
"Tai is that you?" I heard from an unfamiliar voice. I turned around to see a built light skinned guy with dreads. I didn't recognize the smirking idiot standing in front of me.
"Yea I'm Tai." I responded. "You might not remember me but I remember you," he paused "My name is Sean. Yaya was my mama." He said.
Ayana Sutherland, better known as Yaya, was a crack head to the greatest degree. I sold her a lot of dope during my reign of terror. Yaya sometimes wouldn't have enough cash to get her fix, so I would let her perform oral sex and sometimes intercourse in exchange for drugs. I was standing face to face with her neglected child. "Damn! How is old Yaya?" I finally asked trying to sound as calm as possible. “She died from a drug overdose three years ago." The boy replied with hurt and anger in his voice. "I'm sorry to hear that." I responded just before someone hit me in the back of the head.
When I finally came to, my vision was still blurred, but I could hear Sean's voice. "Yea we're going to see just how sorry you are." He said. Apparently he ran the streets now. Sean had a whole crew, and the city was in the palm of his hands. I had always imagined someone being upset about the effects of the drugs I had sold to them or their loved ones, but since I hadn't sold to anyone in the past eight years who would have thought that it would have actually happened? I guess pain like that doesn’t ever really go away. I sat chained to a pole for about an hour and a half, and nothing had happened to me. "What do you want to do with him boss?" I finally heard one of his
goons ask.
"Hand me that needle." Sean responded. "We're going to show this nigga what Yaya went through." I was then injected with heroin. Sean went on to explain to me that he didn't address Yaya as his mother because she was hardly in his life. When Yaya finally did come around, she died a year later.
Sean was raised by his aunt who was abusive, but loved him dearly, and he somehow had managed to truly love her as well. After Yaya's overdose, Sean ran away and vowed to find the man that he believed was responsible for the dysfunction in his life. Since then he had proclaimed himself "King of the streets." Sean was 21 and headed in the wrong direction. I wished I could share my experiences with him so that he wouldn't make the same mistakes that I had made.
