chapter 15

Hearing the river roaring in front of her, Alessandria sat close to the edge staring into the forest on the other side. She could feel the presence of the night demon, or whatever it actually was, staring at her.

The large river roaring past her have Alessandria some comfort. The best case scenario would be the night demon tried to jump into the river and got washed away and fell off the top of the waterfall downstream. But she doubted that would happen quite so perfectly. And Alessandria doubted this so-called demon was stupid enough to try that.

Swirling her fingers over the smooth grey rock of the rover banks, Alessandria felt cold chills pulse up her arm. Then the fresh smell of smoke filled her senses, and oddly made her mouth taste like rabbit.

She admitted to herself that it was a surprise to see Daniel sitting on top of the staircase. It was great seeing them and knowing they were safe. But Alessandria frowned as she remembered the roar of that night demon and they decided to set up camp. But that was all they could do. Just wait on the river banks til morning.

Turning around so she still sat down but faced the mini camp, Alessandria felt a moment of peace and calm for the first time all day.

She smiled as she saw her Mother and Hellen sleeping on a bunch of leaves and a pile of logs to raise them off the damp rock.

A part of her thought it was a shame that Mother said she had to go in the morning for a meeting with the Saga to discuss their progress.

Alessandria knew the real reason was so she would get in a few creature comforts, but maybe she would talk to her Mother. Maybe she could do something to the Saga for her as a favour?

Then Alessandria paused as she saw Nemesio there peacefully sleeping. Her Nemesio. Her strong beautiful man that had earned his place at her side. But why did she keep hesitating?

He did like her. He said that as much on their date and he had so many amazing stories. But- something was still making her resist him.

Telling herself to come back to that problem later, she moved her head and looked at the small but extremely warm fire that Daniel had built. The fire crackled and hummed as the twigs and small branches were devoured by the flames.

Then Alessandria noticed the only person who truly, truly cared for her sat on a large long log poking the fire. Her clever, beautiful brother.

Quietly wandering over to Daniel, she felt the warmth from the fire wash through her leather armour. Before she sat next to Daniel. Then she moved a few times to find a piece of log without a sharp knob sticking into her.

“She loves us you know, Mother,” Daniel said.

Alessandria nodded.

“She... she even wants me to be with Harrison,”

Alessandria cocked her head in shock.

“I know. I was pretty shocked too,” Daniel said.

Alessandria picked up a warm rough stick and poked the fire with it.
