ANAPHORA

This literary tool is another one of those rhetorical devices we have to thank the ancient Greeks for. This one is very cool and has a lot of impact. Anaphora is simply repeating the same words or phrase at the beginning of several consecutive sentences. One of the more famous examples came from Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech: “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed. . . . I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today.” Even if you heard the entire speech, you would probably most remember the “I have a dream” sequence. That’s anaphora at its best!

Corporate leaders often use this technique to rally their employees. You can just imagine a CEO saying “Our competitor says they make a better product than us. We will prove them wrong! Our competitor says they’ll take market share away from us. We will prove them wrong! Our competitor says customers will prefer their product. We will prove them wrong!”
