Chapter Seventeen

Everything had gone swimmingly. In fact, Dr. Epstein was so thrilled with the outcome, he’d told Anna before she’d left the surgery center that it was an “ideal outcome.” She was sore, no doubt about it, but certainly nothing she couldn’t handle.

So why wasn’t she happy? She’d been so optimistic all day. Now that night had fallen and the surgery was over, though, the little seeds of doubt had taken root again. Suddenly, she was glad she hadn’t fought Steph too hard when she’d insisted Anna sleep at her house this first night, at the very least. The hustle and bustle of a fuller house was a good distraction from her thoughts.

“Want some tea or something?” Steph asked as she made her way around the kitchen, cleaning up the dinner dishes. Pop was in the shower, and would be going to bed shortly after. They’d broken the news of Anna’s diagnosis to him the night before, but he’d forgotten about it already—and it had hit him so hard, they’d decided there was no point in reminding him over and over again. He’d assumed she was moving slower than normal due to her fall, and that was fine by her.

It was only when she and Steph were alone that her sister told her about Eva.

“So after tomorrow, that’s it for the foreseeable future?” Anna asked, stunned by the news.

“Yep. I wouldn’t have even bothered you with it at all right now, but you’ll be here when she comes in the morning, and I wanted you to hear it from me first.”

“What now?”

“Great question. Tomorrow, I’ve got to break it to him that he’s going to have to go to the senior center during the daytime so I can at least go to work and come check on you and all. At night, I’ll just figure out how to manage him on my own, I guess.”

Anna only had to look at the fatigue on Steph’s face to know that, despite her words, that wasn’t a viable solution. Not for the long term.

“I can come a couple evenings and you can go out. It will at least give you something of a break. I’ll sit and play cards with him or something…”

“Stop,” Steph said, her tone short as she leveled a glare on Anna. “You aren’t supposed to lift anything heavy, make any jarring movements, or even raise your arms over your head, sis. If I’m not here and he has a dizzy spell or falls, what are you going to do? I’ll tell you what. You’re going to catch him, because you’re stubborn, and then you’re going to set your own recovery back.”

“Steph—”

“Enough!” Stephanie tossed the sponge she’d been holding into the sink and rinsed off her hands with a shuddery sigh. “Sorry. I’m not mad at you, but we—Cee-cee and I—need you to just let us take care of this. We’ll figure it out between us, I’m sure. You want to help ease our mental burden? Get well. Take care of yourself.
