Chapter Seventeen
Everything had gone swimmingly. In fact, Dr. Epstein was so thrilled with the outcome, heâd told Anna before sheâd left the surgery center that it was an âideal outcome.â She was sore, no doubt about it, but certainly nothing she couldnât handle.
So why wasnât she happy? Sheâd been so optimistic all day. Now that night had fallen and the surgery was over, though, the little seeds of doubt had taken root again. Suddenly, she was glad she hadnât fought Steph too hard when sheâd insisted Anna sleep at her house this first night, at the very least. The hustle and bustle of a fuller house was a good distraction from her thoughts.
âWant some tea or something?â Steph asked as she made her way around the kitchen, cleaning up the dinner dishes. Pop was in the shower, and would be going to bed shortly after. Theyâd broken the news of Annaâs diagnosis to him the night before, but heâd forgotten about it alreadyâand it had hit him so hard, theyâd decided there was no point in reminding him over and over again. Heâd assumed she was moving slower than normal due to her fall, and that was fine by her.
It was only when she and Steph were alone that her sister told her about Eva.
âSo after tomorrow, thatâs it for the foreseeable future?â Anna asked, stunned by the news.
âYep. I wouldnât have even bothered you with it at all right now, but youâll be here when she comes in the morning, and I wanted you to hear it from me first.â
âWhat now?â
âGreat question. Tomorrow, Iâve got to break it to him that heâs going to have to go to the senior center during the daytime so I can at least go to work and come check on you and all. At night, Iâll just figure out how to manage him on my own, I guess.â
Anna only had to look at the fatigue on Stephâs face to know that, despite her words, that wasnât a viable solution. Not for the long term.
âI can come a couple evenings and you can go out. It will at least give you something of a break. Iâll sit and play cards with him or somethingâ¦â
âStop,â Steph said, her tone short as she leveled a glare on Anna. âYou arenât supposed to lift anything heavy, make any jarring movements, or even raise your arms over your head, sis. If Iâm not here and he has a dizzy spell or falls, what are you going to do? Iâll tell you what. Youâre going to catch him, because youâre stubborn, and then youâre going to set your own recovery back.â
âStephââ
âEnough!â Stephanie tossed the sponge sheâd been holding into the sink and rinsed off her hands with a shuddery sigh. âSorry. Iâm not mad at you, but weâCee-cee and Iâneed you to just let us take care of this. Weâll figure it out between us, Iâm sure. You want to help ease our mental burden? Get well. Take care of yourself.
