It was chaos. They were throwing absolutely everything they had at me. And it turned out they had a lot – more than they should have for a so-called peaceful training station like this. I was starting to see the kinds of weapons that were not only banned throughout the galaxy, but were specifically designed to do as much damage to civilian targets as they could.

On one level I was surprised – on another, it fit the bill. The Empire had been preparing for war for decades. Of course it would be armed to the teeth. And as for following ethical directives – they planned to turn every Galactic citizens’ implants against them. There was no low the Empire wouldn’t stoop to.

I flipped over another contingent of soldiers, landed down on my knee, shoved a hand into the ground, and pushed up as fast as I could. I felt my muscles contracting seamlessly. Yes, the computer was assisting me with almost every single movement, but a lot of it was coming from my own inherent power.

To think, most of the time, I felt as weak as a newborn. There wasn’t anything I got to decide – there wasn’t anything I could do for myself. Now I was like a god.

No one and nothing could stop me – a point I proved when a drone came sailing around the corner. It was already charged to explode. I flipped to the side quickly. I transported behind it, sliced my sword down, and cut into it as easily as someone carving up a stake. It clattered onto the ground with a great thump.

I heard a strange swishing noise. I looked up to see something I’d only ever witnessed in history books. It was a drone that could assimilate the carcasses of other metal objects into its own body. It allowed it to grow exponentially.

“Bastard,” I stammered as I wasted no time and thrust toward it. I plunged my sword deep into the massive drone’s body. It was already the size of three men put together. My sword sailed in easily, but then there was this sucking sound. It was trying to pull the blade from my hand.

“Not on my watch,” I stammered as I yanked back with all my might. There was a massive electrical discharge, and despite the drone’s capabilities, it couldn’t hold onto the metal. But was it metal? It was hard to say. Yes, my sword was acting like a solid – and yes, it felt real enough in my hands. But it was still, fundamentally, energy that was being overlaid over this augmented reality by the computer.

I screamed, tumbled to the side, and started attacking the corridor around me instead of the drone directly. Maybe that was a mistake – the more metal I threw at it, the more it could eat.

But I had a plan.

There were several discarded drones around me. I plucked one up quickly. I wasn’t just good at the Game. Over the years, I’d learned how to fight like a real soldier.
