Moments of Guilt

The next morning, Walker was up before Stella, quietly showered and made his way down the stairs to start coffee and breakfast.

He’d felt bad that the minute she was in the door they ended up in his room naked and rolling around. And if he could welcome her like that every time he saw her he’d be one happy man.

But he couldn’t and they’d have to take advantage of the time they had together.

All week he’d worried that she might think he wasn’t really interested so he made sure that he texted something since they couldn’t talk with other people around. That he couldn’t say the things he wanted.

Not that he texted them to her, but they did tease and flirt and days of that without touching her but seeing her all dressed up and imagining her hand on this thigh or his on hers was enough. For once he couldn’t wait for Kaylee to go home yesterday morning.

Then he had several moments of guilt over that. He’d never been that way before.

He reminded himself time and again that he was entitled to this. He wasn’t kicking his daughter out to have a night with a woman. That Kaylee was scheduled to go home.

He’d done laundry, cleaned, did some work and killed as much time as he could before Stella was due to arrive for dinner, all the while hoping she was on the same wavelength as him.

The fact she said she had an overnight bag in her car when they were eating dinner helped ease any thoughts that she might not have been ready.

“Morning.”

He turned to see her standing at the bottom of the stairs in one of his shirts, her hair in a ponytail, her eyes sleepy.

“Morning,” he said and walked over to kiss her. “I’m making breakfast if you’re hungry. I was going to bring it upstairs.”

“We could have eaten in your living room up there,” she said, laughing.

He rolled his eyes. “It’s too big of a bedroom, but I set it up that way because when Kaylee was little she wouldn’t always go to sleep right away. I wanted to be able to hear her and be close while I watched TV but not be in bed.”

One of those many nights he wondered how he was going to do this alone, but it worked out well enough.

“It is a big house. How many bedrooms are up there?”

“Five,” he said. “More than I needed. But I liked the area and I wanted her to have space.”

“There is plenty here,” she said. “Let me help you with breakfast.”

“No,” he said. “I want to cook for you.”

“Well then,” she said, “I’ll just get coffee and watch. Hope it was okay to borrow your shirt?”

“Any time,” he said.

She made her coffee and sat at the island while he cooked. “Since you’re up, you can choose. Omelets or pancakes?”

“Pancakes any day of the week,” she said. “We burned a lot of calories last night. We can refuel and hit the mattress again.
