CHAPTER 11

“OKAY, TEAM, LISTEN up,” Tobias said to the crew aboard the shuttle. “This is where the crunch time happens. We’re going to have company in a few moments. Lots of it. The satellites might be disabled, making it hard for them to attack us remotely, but they still have ground troops and fighters. And as soon as we begin drilling, they will know we aren’t just a transport with a systems malfunction. We need to get in and get out again quick.” He paused and looked at each of them in turn. “We need to work together, no ifs ands or buts. Questions will get us all killed.” The shuttle crew was silent as the weight of what he was saying settled in. Tobias nodded. “Okay. Caree. You did an excellent job with helping us to land safely. We need you to get the reflective shielding up as soon as Kendrick picks his spot to drill. Axel, you and I will take point position for covering the area. We need to keep this area secure while Kendrick digs beneath the lava lake and makes an access tunnel.” He turned to the Buggy. “That’s when you will do your part in breaking our objectives out of the prison.” They each nodded in turn, indicating their readiness to take on the assigned tasks. “The rest of you, keep your comm channels open and assist where asked. Backup and support is essential to every successful campaign.” Ellie and Shiznit nodded agreement. “They say that breaking into a Borbian prison is impossible. Today we will prove them wrong.” He clapped his hands together. “Let’s do it.”

The team broke up, everyone heading to their assigned tasks, an air of urgency guiding their actions. Axel assisted Ellie and Caree in gathering up the three arm-length transmitter arrays, which when placed appropriately, triangulated a signal that created a remote shield generator.

“Okay, let me back Dirt Eater out of this piece of junk,” Kendrick said. He jumped into the cockpit of the drilling machine that was loaded in the cargo area.

The piece of mining equipment sported a cone-shaped hull supported on four legs. The cockpit sat behind the front of the massive drill bit, with the engine to power the machine behind the cockpit. Kendrick controlled the drill with ease, the legs moving as if connected to an organic being. He reversed it from the rear of the Borbian ship through the raised hatch loading door of the cargo area.

As Axel placed the shield transmitter he carried onto the ground, he watched his older brother move the vehicle into position. The front legs lowered to allow the head to be angled at the ground.

“Okay, this is it.” Kendrick motioned at the spot he’d chosen to dig.

Axel nodded and gestured at Ellie and Caree to position their parts of the array around the digging machine and the shuttle. He switched his own on, and as soon as theirs were in position, a semi-translucent blue shimmer appeared in an arc about five meters around them all and the dig site.
