I RUBBED MY eyes as I finished up my last report. I glanced at the time and groaned. It was seven. Where the hell did the time go? I picked up my phone and called Hales.

“Hello?” I could hear the kids arguing in the background.

“Sorry it’s so late. I got busy at work. Who’s arguing? And can you ask my kiddos what they want for dinner?”

“The twins are fighting like usual. And I already fed all the kids.”

“I owe you big time. I didn’t realize how much I was behind from taking off. I will be there soon to get them. I’m so sorry, Hales.”

“It’s fine. It’s what I’m here for. Why don’t you let them stay and finish their movie? Go take Sadie out for dinner alone.”

I looked at the phone oddly before putting it back to my ear. “Did you just tell me to go on a date with your mortal enemy?”

“It was Zach’s idea. Not mine. Don’t get too excited.”

“All right. I will be by later. Oh, and what the hell were you thinking talking Trev into hiring Dana?”

She laughed. “She’s going to be great, and why don’t you just act like an adult and not be dramatic about it?”

“It’s awkward.”

“Only if you make it awkward. She’s amazing and needed a job.”

“I’m going to give it a chance.”

“Thank you. Now go on your date before I change my mind.” She laughed.

I smiled and hung up. I dialed Sadie’s number.

“Hey, Daisy-Love.”

“Hey, how is Tate today?” I hated how depressed she sounded.

“I don’t know. I haven’t gotten to see him. He’s at Hales and Zach’s. I lost track of time at work. I wanted to know if you wanted to go out to eat with me?”

She was quiet for a second. “Sure. We need to talk. Was Dana there?”

“Sadly, yes.” I suddenly got knots in my stomach. “What’s wrong, Sadie?” I stood up and grabbed my keys. I walked out of my office and locked the door. I turned and dropped my phone as Dana scared the shit out of me. “Why aren’t you gone?” I snapped as I grabbed my phone off the floor. I cursed when I saw it was broken. I glared at her. I went to move past her when she grabbed my arm with her hand.

“Talk to me. We haven’t seen each other in a while. And I was working late to organize everything. It’s all a mess.” She let go of my arm.

“I’m dating someone, Dana.”

“I know, Dane. I’m here to work and nothing more. I swear.”

I nodded and some of the tension left. “Lock up when you leave.”

I walked out the front door and to the parking lot. I got in the truck and headed straight for the dance studio. As I pulled in, the Rover was starting to pull out. I watched as she stopped and parked again. I parked the truck and got out.

“Sorry. I dropped my damn phone and it broke,” I said as she got out.

She couldn’t make eye contact with me.
