CHAPTER FOURTEEN

LEAH

“This Saturday?” I cry, frozen in place and holding a knife above the cutting board. “What the hell, T.J.?”

“Uh oh,” Sasha says, breezing into the kitchen. He glances from T.J. to me, an amused grin tugging at his lips. “Trouble in paradise?”

Ignoring him, I glare at T.J., who was in the middle of cracking open two beers.

Cringing, he hands me one. “Drink this first. Then I’ll explain.”

I set the beer down and lean my hip against the very same counter we used just days ago for recreational purposes. Since then we’ve gotten creative with the couch, the dining room table, and of course, the bed, where he’s been every night since I’ve been here. My feelings on this are all over the place, but with trying to cram in as much skiing as I can, I haven’t taken the time to sort through anything.

“You’re right, I should have told you,” T.J. says. “I just sort of forgot that part.”

“Which? The part where I have to wear heels or the part about it being in Paris in four fucking days?”

“Ah,” Sasha says, reaching into the fridge for a beer. “This is about the party.”

I shoot daggers at him with my eyes. “You knew?”

He downs a sip of beer and leans against the opposite wall. “I knew it was in Paris but heels don’t bother me.”

“Very funny,” I reply, then point the tip of the knife at T.J. “It’s not about the heels, okay? It’s just that I went from thinking this is dinner out with family to finding out it’s some swanky gala in Paris.”

Gently, T.J. gets me to lower the knife, then he takes my hand. “At least we’re on the same continent. Drew could have picked Shanghai.”

I must have blanched because he quickly adds, “Don’t worry, I already bought us tickets.”

My hackles jump to life. “I told you I always pay my way.”

“I’m not going to let you spend your money on this.”

I bristle. “Let me?” The words are ice on my tongue. “Okay, back up here. What I do or don’t do is my fucking business. You don’t ‘let me’ do anything. I’m choosing to go with you and I’ll choose to fucking pay my way.”

“God, you’re stubborn,” he says, his eyes flashing. “It’s just a train ticket.”

“Apparently now it’s a fancy outfit, and a hotel too, right?”

T.J. turns to face the counter, his hands gripping the edge. “Forget I asked, okay? You don’t have to go.”

“Let me know when you two are ready for makeup sex,” Sasha says, sauntering out of the room, beer in hand. “I’ll be upstairs.”

“Why won’t you let me take care of you?” he says softly.

The question prickles my skin. I cross my arms. “Because that’s how it starts.”

He steps closer, a wounded look in his eyes. “What? Love?”

My heart slams into my throat so hard a shock wave echoes upward, making my forehead throb. “Please don’t say that.”

“What? That I love you?”

“Yes.” My entire body is on high alert, as if there’s some kind of threat.
