Laughter drifted across the front yard of the homeless shelter from a group of volunteers, mostly young men, who were carrying furniture out of the house and fitting it Tetris style into a rented storage pod. Hillary’s gaze found Javier where she suspected he would be—in the middle of the sweaty happy group. He gave her a little wave and a smile.

Hillary may have helped him get organized online, but he was a real ringmaster in person. The man oozed charm yet maintained a humble attitude. If she wanted to find him in the crowded yard of the shelter, all she needed to do was follow the smiles he left in his wake. She’d never met a man like him. He’d been blessed with good looks, charisma, and intelligence, and he used those super powers for good. She returned the wave and observed their handiwork.

A medium sized bouncy house covered half of the front lawn. Next to the bouncy house were carnival style games with lines of children in front of each one. The side yard held two mini soccer nets and half a dozen kids and teens played an intense game on the short field. In the back there was a beanbag toss and one hole of mini golf. Christian music poured from speakers on the front porch and a steady stream of visitors flowed in and out of the front door. The living room of the house had been cleared out and folding tables set up for a bake sale and silent auction to raise money for the renovations.

Nearly one hundred men, women, and children roamed about the yard and house. It was a great turnout. It helped that the Fourth of July fell on a Monday so many parents and children were free to come, but even so, Hillary was impressed.

Hillary’s table was positioned across the bottom of the driveway, spread with a red tablecloth and decorated with red, white, and blue flags and stars. A blue plastic crate sat in the middle. The entrance fee for their mini Fourth of July fair was a donation—any donation—and when the blue crate was full of blankets, toilet paper, dry goods, gift cards, and other items, she emptied it into cardboard boxes under the table. She was running out of boxes and they’d only been open for an hour.

A familiar minivan drove past the shelter and parked half a block down. Hillary clapped her hands. Her niece and nephew would love this. Moments later, their straw-colored heads came into view followed by Howard, Ellen, Mom, and Dad. Howie and Coryn wore matching flag t-shirts and handed her their donations with a mixture of pride and shyness.

“Hi, guys! What did you bring me?” Hillary reached across the table to take the small package that Coryn carefully lifted up to her. “Light bulbs? Thank you.” Hillary set the light bulbs in the blue crate and came around to the table to give her niece a hug.

“I’ve got a crowbar.” Howie held up the tool and grinned like only an eight-year-old boy holding a manly weapon of destruction could.
