In the present, in her bed in the house she shared with Barney’s daughter, Ginny sat up abruptly and rubbed in agitation at her hair. How on earth had it got to this? That she, a mature woman with a grown-up daughter, was tossing and turning in bed, worked up into a sweat with feelings she’d really rather not be having, over the man who had got her into this predicament in the first place? And the more she thought about the previous night in the restaurant, his casual charm, the touching of her cheek, the kissing of her hand, the careless kiss on the lips that had sent her into a turmoil of confusion, the more she felt he had been flirting with her. And what a result. Her body hadn’t felt this warm, this sensitive, this alive, for many years.

‘Oh my God.’

This could not happen. She had to put a stop to it, for everybody’s sake. She had to make an excuse to see Barney and attempt to control the situation. She had some photographs for him. That would do nicely. She got up, stamped across the bedroom floor and found her handbag. In a pocket was the piece of paper where she’d scribbled down the mobile number he’d given her. She stabbed out the number and sat on the edge of the bed, closing her eyes for concentration.

‘Barney? It’s Ginny. I’d like to see you.’

‘Ginny!’ He paused. ‘Is everything all right?’

‘Yes, everything’s fine.’

‘Is it Marie? Has something happened?’

‘No, it’s not Marie. I just need to talk to you. And – er – I’ve had the photos you chose developed. They’re ready for you. When can you make it?’

She heard him shuffling about, perhaps looking at a diary or maybe just absorbing her strident tone. ‘I can do Friday evening. Are you free?’

‘I can be free then.’

‘I’ll come down to you.’

‘No, I’ll come to London. We can meet somewhere.’

‘Well, come to my house then. It saves hanging about in the cold.’ She heard him breathing, could practically feel him frowning. ‘Are you sure everything’s all right?’

‘Yes,’ she said edgily. ‘Where do you live?’

‘Ginny, have you changed your mind about all this? About me getting to know Marie? If so, please warn me, because if all this is going to disappear again . . .’

‘No, it’s not that.’ She took a deep breath and softened her tone, sympathy for him creeping up again. ‘It’s all right Barney, I just thought you’d like to have some photos of Marie after all this time without any. And we probably should talk again.’

‘Yes,’ he said after another pause. ‘Yes, I think you’re right. Well, I live in Wimbledon.’ He gave her his address and directions from the tube. ‘That’s if you’re sure you want to come to London.’

‘It’ll be fine. I can be there by seven.’

‘I’ll see you at my house at seven then.’

After she’d rung off, Ginny found that her hands were trembling. She stared at them, troubled, then ran herself a hot bath, piling bath foam into the water.
