Chapter seventeen

Fallon

Irecognized my mistake as soon as the words left my mouth. Aislinn couldn’t go on a train. She had no form of identification and with the way she looked, the authorities would stop her and ask questions. We didn’t need that sort of interest in us. Not that the humans believed in magic anymore. The fact Rory appeared to have taken to Erin’s news she was Fae made me question if he already distinguished all the hidden supernatural creatures in the world.

I flung my arm along the back of the sofa behind Aislinn’s back and twirled my fingers around the thick braid of her hair. The silky strands soothed me. I wanted more answers before we took Rory anywhere with us.

“So, Rory, you don’t seem fazed that we’re Fae.”

His gaze met mine before ducking to Erin. “I noticed a few things that didn’t add up.” He shrugged. “I’m a curious person by nature and love reading. The library was helpful.” He laughed. “Remember that famous vampire book where the girl finds a book about vampires and understands the guy is one. It was like that.”

“There are books about Fae?” Aislinn asked.

“There are books about everything you can ever imagine.” He gave Erin a loving smile. “I wasn’t one hundred percent sure what she was, but I realized she was magical. I mean, look at her. She’s so gorgeous, how could she not be?”

Did I sound like this lovesick fool? Probably. No wonder Hamish and the others had left. I owed them an apology no doubt.

“Most people would freak out though,” I shoved on, not convinced Rory was as innocent as he played.

He puffed out a breath through his cheeks. “I freaked out when I saw lightning spark from your hands.”

“What?” I scowled. “When did you see that?”

I was always so careful to release my power when there were no humans around. How had Rory snuck up on me? How had he seen me use my power and not say anything? To what end had he kept quiet? Did he want to blackmail me? Or use us?

Rory rubbed the back of his neck. “I… um… followed you one night back to your camp.”

“How?”

Hamish was always so careful when driving back to our secluded camp site, Rory shouldn’t have been able to follow us. He should never have seen me use my power.

“My uncle, he… ah… he’s a pickpocket and a talented thief. He raised me when my parents died in a car crash. The black sheep of the family as they say who I’d never met until the day I went to live with him as a moody teenage boy. He believed teaching me all the tricks of his trade was the best way to communicate with me.”

“You’re an orphan?”

Damn, I didn’t want to sympathize with this young man, but hearing those words did just that. I understood all too well what it was like to lose both parents at once. To be left alone in a world you no longer understood.
