CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Abbie stirred from her deep sleep, covering her eyes and snapping them shut from the assaulting sun streaming through the window. Where was she? The evening before was foggy like a lost memory. She had mindlessly made her way to Jakeâs Tavern. She wasnât surprised she ended up there. It had always been a haven for Jake and her. She remembered Doughlas. It felt like an eternity since she had last seen him. His bear hug and heartily laugh was like a well needed balm to her soul. She missed him. She didnât realize how much until that moment.
Just then her pillow shifted and she shot upright in bed. Beside her lay Charlie, fully dressed and fast asleep. The blood raced in her head and for a moment she thought she was going to be sick. She laid back down on the pillow beside him.
She remembered the tavern, Doughlas, her friendsâ¦and the beer. She wanted to crawl into a hole and never come out. What would Charlie think of her now? She would have to convince him to never mention this to anyone. Forcing herself upright, she put her legs over the edge of the bed. She might be sick right there, but for a completely different reason. She remembered the room last night, and a conversation she had with Charlie. It was official, she wanted to die.
âAre you okay?â Charlieâs voice startled her so much that she nearly jumped out of her skin. The throbbing in her brain stopped her from moving. She put a hand to her temple and waited for the thumping to stop. Charlie stood up from the bed and quickly left the room. He was back moments later and knelt in front of her.
âDrink this,â he offered her a glass of water.
She took it in her hands and sat for a moment with her head down. How could she even bare to face him? Her memory was foggy but what she remembered was more than she wanted to.
âAbbie?â He put a hand on her arm. She steeled herself for the judgement, at the very least, the disappointment that she was sure she would find in his eyes. The mutinous tears began creeping their way to her lashes. She slowly looked up. But there was no judgment in Charlieâs eyes. No disappointment, only concern.
âAre you okay?â he asked. She nodded her head, immediately regretting that movement and stopped abruptly. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She remembered the room last night. She remembered holding his face in her hands, trying to see Jake there. She remembered kissing him. The tears rolled down her cheeks.
âCharlie, I am so sorry for-â she started.
âShh,â he shook his head and whipped a row of tears from her cheek. She looked up at him. He smiled a simple smile of understanding. It was more than she had expected, and it nearly undid her.
âDrink your water.â He gave her arm a light squeeze and stood up. âIâm going to go see about some breakfast.
