THE FREEHAND SOCIETY

I wake early the next morning, slip out of bed and go to find myself a cup of coffee. Einstein is up and lost in the notebook and its calculations. There’s already a pot on the sideboard, so I pour myself a cup and join him at the table near the window.

“May I?” I gesture to an empty chair, pulling him from his work.

“Good morning, Ms. Holiday. Of course,” he replies. “Did you have a good night’s rest?”

“I did. It’s so peaceful here. Not at all like where we come from. How about you?”

“Yah, I did, very good indeed, and then this morning I was up at first light. I couldn’t wait to get back into these equations.” He turns his attention back to the notebook for a brief moment before continuing. “I remembered this morning that we got interrupted yesterday, when you were telling us about how you found this.”

“That’s right, we did.” I take a sip of my coffee. “Well, let’s see, where did I leave off?”

“Something about a marble tile,” he answers.

“Oh yes, well, like I said, there was a marble tile. It must have been loose because when I fell into the bench, I heard a sound and looked down to see the notebook lying there.”

“I see. So it just fell out from behind the tile?”

“Yes, I mean, I think so…and correct me if I am wrong…but doesn’t someone have to put it back there so I can find it in the future?”

Einstein pauses, takes his pipe and tobacco from his jacket pocket, opens the tobacco satchel and dips the pipe in, filling the bowl. “Yes, I believe you are correct.”

“I mean, if I don’t find it in the future, then none of this happens, right?”

“Theoretically…” He gently tamps down the tobacco with his finger and then reaches into the bag and plucks another bit, adding it to the pipe. “What was the name of the hotel?” he asks.

“The Freehand,” I reply.

I hadn’t noticed Hale come into the room. He’s retrieving a book from his collection when he overhears our conversation and chimes in.

“The Freehand?”

“Yes, that’s right,” I say.

He looks to Einstein and Einstein to him and then Einstein chuckles. “Very interesting. You know, Hale, Bohr and I belong to a secret group that have been working on time travel for the last nine years. Guess what we call ourselves?”

“I have no idea,” I answer.

He lights his pipe. “The Freehand Society!”

“I don’t believe it! That’s incredible, but why the Freehand Society?”

Hale finds the book he is looking for and pulls it from the self. “Mostly because we have had nothing but our minds to guide us on our quest for time travel. Much like an artist draws without anything to guide their hand, we’ve had no mechanical devices…nothing to test out our equations or our theories. Well, that is until recently when Van De Graaf finished his collider.”

“That’s right,” Einstein interrupts. “Thank God for Heir Van De Graaf and his machine.”

“I’m curious…” Hale continues.
