Alone in her dimmed room, Tajém was huddled on her bed, staring at the bookshelf across from her. All the contents—books and mementos and awards—were spilled onto the floor, scattered like they didn’t matter. Sitting atop the empty shelves were five burning chemiluminescent pods, giving the chamber an eerie blue glow.

The Tópáséun scooted to the edge of her bed, sniffling as she fought the tears that poured down her face. “I do not want you to leave me again,” she whispered. “You all leave, but I remain. And I know that you are already gone, but… this thing that has happened to me… My heart has broken again for each of you.” She swiped at her eyes, trying to compose herself, but her voice kept breaking. “I tell myself I will be brave for you, that I will protect the innocent for you, that I will do my best for you. But it hurts to be so alone. Nobody knows this pain that I carry. And I stay silent about it because nobody can understand.”

Knock, knock.

Inhaling sharply, she leapt off the bed. Deftly, she smoothed at her hair and dabbed at her eyes. “Í’ak, lights to eighty percent,” she said softly. Immediately, the room brightened. Clearing her throat, she walked over and opened the door, When she opened it, she gasped.

Rick sighed and shrugged as he stood in the hallway. “Hey, I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a really crappy couple of days. You want to hit the gym with me? Burn some of it off?”

Tilting her head in surprise, Tajém glanced back at the bookshelf’s disarray and the pods still ablaze on top. Then she turned back to Rick and smiled—her first one since their return from Ú’epu. “You know… yes. Yes, I would.”
