Consider this example from the Vermont Writing Collaborative with Student Achievement Partners and CCSSO through Achieve the Core. Students were asked to write an argument letter to teachers arguing for or against participating in “Shut Down Your Screen Week.” The students used a collection of articles to make their arguments. From a seventh grade example:

Claim: My question is. should we participate in the national “Shut Down Your Screen Week”? I think it would be a good idea for many reasons.Here, the students lays out her claim—yes, we should participate.
