Introduction

Growing fruit and vegetables with very young children requires some patience and perseverance, as well as regular watering checks. However, the results outweigh any disadvantages. They will learn how to plant, tend, harvest and, above all, prepare and eat the crops they have grown themselves. Involving parents and other members of the community will help to make the job easier to manage.

A dedicated growing space is the key to success. If you are currently designing your outdoor space, think carefully about separating this space from another area, which needs to be available for children to dig freely whenever they wish. Again, the size and style of your growing area will depend on the available space. Paving slabs can be used to divide a single small raised bed into areas for different plants. Some nurseries are lucky enough to have several raised beds, while others use garden tyres, flower pots or window boxes. If outdoor access is limited, consider using plant troughs or window boxes on ledges or on the floor if you have full height windows. Growbags are useful and can be placed in special plastic trays that make it easier to water and keep the surrounding space free from soil.
