I thought everything would go smoothly. How could it? Every time I thought I was safe, something would always happen to prove to me that this galaxy would never let me live freely.

I’d gotten away from that security division ship. I’d left it in such a state that it would have no way to track me.

But then I lost control of my energy.

It happened all of a sudden. I’d been nodding off in the chair, allowing myself to finally fall into a restful slumber when something had risen from within me. Confusion – fear. Call it what you want. But it had swallowed me. And in a moment of total idiocy, I’d let my energy out. It had eaten through the control console in front of me. In the blink of an eye, it had done so much damage that there was no way the ship could rebound from it.

What happened next happened quickly. I dropped out of beyond-light speed. With no control whatsoever over the ship, it crash-landed on an asteroid.

Now I sat there, glued to the controls, trying to pump them full of energy – desperately trying to make them work once more. But they wouldn’t.

My ship was only just airtight.

I honest to God did not know what would happen when the final external seal broke. The hull was down to five percent integrity.

The asteroid out there did not have a breathable atmosphere.

Would I be sucked out into it? Would I pop like a balloon? Or would… the energy within me rise up and protect me once more?

Maybe it wasn’t here to protect me, though. It had condemned me. Without it, I’d still be free.

As I squeezed my eyes closed, my hands clamped around a warped section of metal my power had destroyed, I thought of what Peter had said. I couldn’t control myself, so he wouldn’t let me hurt any more people.

As tears trailed down my cheeks, I tried to stop them and pull myself together, but there was nothing I could do. They were relentless. They swarmed my face, practically flooding it and drowning me underneath their oppressive weight.

I suddenly balled up a hand and pounded it against the console. I only broke it further.

The computer was only barely operating now. As I smashed through yet another section of console, what remained of the viewscreen flickered with a flashing warning light. “Integrity is down to two percent.”

I opened my eyes. I stared dully ahead of me.

Could this be better? If I was sucked out into space on this asteroid, then no one would have a chance to get their hands on me. Peter wouldn’t be able to use me. And the heart… whatever it was, would remain free.

I had a chance to think that, but something rose within me. It was a force like no other. It was that knowledge. It told me in no uncertain terms that I could not go down. Not like this. Not ever. I had something to do.

So I curled my hands around the edge of the console again.
