Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel stands in Belaire Cove, a few miles from the main church in Ville Platte. The property was purchased in 1938 from Marie B. Fontenot for $150, and the building was erected two years later for $3,000. Bishop Jules B. Jeanmard of the Diocese of Lafayette officiated at the dedication and blessing of the chapel on March 30, 1940. (Courtesy of Runnie F. Matte.)

St. Ann’s Catholic Church was established in 1914 to serve the many Catholic families scattered over the prairies of central Evangeline Parish. The town of Mamou had been laid out only three years earlier, but it was growing rapidly. The original church building burned down in 1936, but it was rebuilt the following year.
