Chapter 5

Josh dodged a large plant and zig-zagged around lush foliage towards the hot tub. He stopped short when he saw Sara jump in, her body on top of Laurie as the two girls struggled silently. He stood still, amused while watc hing the two of them going at it in the hot tub, then shook it off and turned back to make sure the little girl didn’t walk in to this.

“What’s going on?” Josh asked, loud enough they both stopped their splashing. He knelt at the edge of the tub.

“I think Laurie has something to tell you, Josh,” Sara panted. Laurie was against the wall of the tub, while Sara straddled her and held her arms.

The woman spit water out and glared at Sara. “I said I was sorry!”

“You tell him right now, or I will. If you don’t, I’ll call the police.”

“Police! No, please don’t!” Laurie struggled until Sara jerked her hands up higher.

“Woah, you two! Let’s get out of the tub and talk about this like adults.”

“No.”

“No?” Josh leaned back on the balls of his feet. He was curious why Sara and Laurie were in the hot tub in the first place. He held out his hand. “Come on, Sara, there’s a child inside.”

Her eyelids fluttered and she turned her head to peer around the corner as if she realized how bad they were behaving. “You’re right, sorry.” Sara began to climb from the hot tub. Josh helped the other woman out, but stayed close in case they started in on each other again. He had to admit, it was interesting watching the two.

“What happened here?”

“Laurie has something to say. Go on.” She turned to Laurie, who was standing in the middle of the garden, dripping wet.

“I am truly sorry, but I was asked to come here to find out if Sara knew anything about Cory’s visit.”

Sara placed her hands on her hips. “She started questioning me the moment we were alone, but I picked up on things right away.” She glared at Laurie. “You’re not done, there’s more.” She took a step towards Laurie, but Josh placed his arm between the two.

“There will be no more fighting. Look.” Katie was standing at the French doors, looking out. When she saw her mommie soaking wet, she slapped her hand over her mouth and began to giggle, her tiny shoulders shaking. She tried to push open the door to come outside.

“Hurry,” Sara told her. “Tell him, now.”

Josh watched as Laurie reached in her dripping wet jeans and pulled out a small device. She held it out to Josh. “I was instructed to place this in your house. I’m sorry. I was told Cory Huntington stole from the company and there was a possibility he gave the goods to Sara. Mr. Kelley sent me here on vacation and asked me to do this. He promised me that all he wanted to do was to retrieve what belonged to him and if I did this, along with this free trip, I would get free daycare for a year.
