Friedrich and Melka were sitting at the breakfast table talking when Regina walked in without knocking.
âDonât be frightened,â she said quickly. âI knew I would surprise you, butââshe put an arm across her motherâs shoulderââdonât be alarmed. I havenât been dismissed, and nothing bad has happened to me.â
She kissed her mother, then her father. âYouâre eating rather late, arenât you? Is there any warm milk left?â
âNo, dear, but Iâll warm some. You must be cold. Take off your wraps. Youâll be with us all day, I hope. Do tell us how this happened.â
âI canât stay quite all day,â Regina pulled off her woolen gloves and head scarf. âI broke Catriâs best and cherished soup bowl. She doesnât know it, but I want to go back by way of Zurich and get one to replace it.â
âBack by way of Zurich? You canât do it, Regina.â
âWhy not, Father? The pastor borrowed one of the lordâs horses from the castle barn for me.â
âThatâs different. Here, let me hang up your coat. I thought you walked. But even so, you canât stay long and get back to Kyburg before dark. Did you put the horse inside?â
âYes.â
âStrange neither Mother nor I heard you coming. We were so busy talking.â
Regina sat down and drew the chair up to the table âI came early because I want to leave by noon or before.â She looked at the clock. âI ought to get back then before dark. My, itâs good to be home!â
âIâm very glad you came. Regina. Mother, donât wash the dishes. Letâs talk while Reginaâs here.â
âHereâs the milk, dear, and I brought you some bread, too. Regina, you look thin. Are you working too hard at Hofmeierâs?â
âNo, Mother, I donât have to work any harder than I expected to. Iâd much rather be busy than not.â
âAnd theyâre good to you?â asked Father.
âGood!â answered Regina. âI really donât know how they could be kinder to me. Iâm all right. And Iâm not much thinner than I was.â
âDo you get enough to eat?â asked Mother.
âI get all I care for. Itâs you and Father who look thin. Are you getting enough to eat? Father, you seem tired and troubled.â
âMother and I have lost our appetites and hours of sleep in the past weeks, Regina, mostly over Hans, I guess.â
âOver Hans?â Regina set the cup on the saucer. âHave you heard from him?â
âNothing. Not one word. But Michel has been telling us how things are going over in the Emmental.â
âMichel came to see me.â
âHe told us he did. He told us how he warned you, Regina. He says it is terrible for the Anabaptists to oppose the government. The more I think over all heâs been telling us, the more Iâm convinced heâs right. And, Regina, Michel is in a position to know.â
âWhat do you mean, Father?â
âI mean what I said, Regina. Michel must be right. He says the Anabaptists simply cannot be taking the right attitude. When I think how Uncle Rudolf allowed himself to be influenced, IâI just canât sleep, to think Hans is over there! Weâve both lost sleep over all this.
