Erimem woke with a feeling of warm and relaxation.

Her eyes opened sharply.

She also had the feeling of a body pressed close against her back. She turned and saw the back of a dark head on the pillow beside her. Adam hadn’t decided to try his luck. They had simply moved closer in the night and wound up sleeping back to back in the middle of the bed. She had read about what sleeping positions in couples meant in a book Andy had given her on body language. According to her book, this back to back position meant that they were relaxed and comfortable together. She was pleased for what that said about Adam. He had been faced with a lot that previous day and he had come through it more or less intact, and he hadn’t run for the spare suite.

Relationships were not Erimem’s strong suit. At least not romantic relationships. Her friendship with Andy was something she understood and that meant she understood how Olivia fitted into her life too. Ibrahim and Helena were her family by blood, and Andy and Olivia were her family by choice. The relationships with other people at the university... she understood those too. Security Dan, the fifty-something who patrolled the campus during the day always made her smile with stories of his wife and their children – and now grandchildren. She understood her tutors, she understood, the people she worked with in her role as Ibrahim’s assistant. Romance, though, that was different. It was complicated. Things were different in the Twenty First Century than they had been in her father’s palace. She had known what fate had likely awaited her even if it was not something she would have enjoyed. The freedom to choose the man or woman she would give her heart to... that was something she had never anticipated. Putting down roots in one place had never been her plan either. Even after arriving in London she had always assumed that she would move on at some point. But she was still there, still at the university and still happy with her family. It was too early to know if Adam Docherty had a place in her long-term future, but for now, she was content to have him in her present.

She contemplated sliding her arm over his waist. No, that would be too intimate a thing to do. It would send him messages she did not want to send. Did she?

She would think about that later. Moving slowly so that she didn’t wake Adam, Erimem slipped out of bed and made her way to the bathroom.
