Enthusiasm Works Miracles in Problems
Eleven words can make an amazing difference in your life. Here they are: Every problem contains within itself the seeds of its own solution.
This eleven-word formula, a masterpiece of insight and fact, is by Stanley Arnold who is considered by the many business leaders who have employed his problem-solving talents as America’s idea man number one.
In fact, Stanley Arnold has built the business of problem-solving into a million-dollar enterprise. Where others see nothing but discouragement and defeat, he finds amazing opportunity that leads to achievement. He discovered and utilizes the fact, unrealized by so many, that every problem has buried within itself an inherent good. But his own classic phrase says it best. Every problem contains within itself the seeds of its own solution.
Stanley Arnold has dedicated his entire life to solving problems, his own and others. He does his job by thinking and reflecting. And he learned this skill early in life. In the book The Executive Breakthrough* Auren Uris describes Arnold’s early beginnings.
“Stanley Arnold, thirteen years old, leaned against a backyard tree and brooded about the fact that he was probably the worst broad jumper in the entire Cleveland school system. ‘If I’m so bad at jumping forward,’ he thought, ‘maybe I could learn to jump backward.’ Stanley stood up, hopped back, and tumbled down on the lawn. He tried it again, and this time, didn’t stumble. Before long, he was able to jump backward several feet, with even a measure of grace.
“When he told the gym teacher about it, and suggested that the class might have a backward-jumping contest, the man looked at his spindly pupil and said, ‘Perhaps; it might be fun.’ At the next gym class, the coach announced, ‘Now we’ll try a standing back jump.’ The teacher explained that it was like a regular broad jump, except that the contestants would be measured on the basis of how far back they could go.
“One by one, the class’s top athletes took their positions, flung themselves backward, and landed a few inches away, flat on their rumps. When Stan’s turn came, the others leaned forward, expecting the usual clownish performance. He bent low, and then unwinding like a coiled spring, flew gracefully in reverse, landing neatly on his feet. Unquestionably, the school had not only a new and exciting event, but the world’s first champion backward broad jumper.
“Since that time, Stanley Arnold has jumped on to considerably greater things, invariably creating the same sort of excitement for his clients that he created as a youngster for his schoolmates. Today, he is president of Stanley Arnold & Associates, Inc., an organization whose sole function is to contrive novel ways for companies to increase the sales of their products.”
So, always remember Stanley Arnold’s great statement: “Every problem contains within itself the seeds of its own solution.” And you will have the enthusiasm that works miracles in your problems.
