Chapter 13

Everyone got up and left the classroom. Except for me. I didn’t move. I couldn’t. I just continued to sit there on the mossy ground in stunned silence. The story she told sounded way too similar to what went on between me and a certain someone. I suddenly had way too much I was thinking about. I didn’t think it could ever be possible here, but I felt like my brain was gonna explode.

Zipporah noticed me frozen on the ground. Once the last soul was gone, she came over and knelt down in front of me. A look of concern was in her eyes.

“Are you all right, Harmony?” she asked.

I was surprised that she knew who I was, and that made me look up at her. “How do you know my name?”

“I know who you are.” She smiled warmly. “And I’ve been waiting for you.”

I narrowed my eyes at her response. I was expecting her to say something along the lines of Luke telling her, or, more logically, about knowing who was signed up for her class. She knew who I was, and had been waiting for me?… What?

“You’ve been waiting for me?” I was totally dumbfounded.

“Yes… It was inevitable that one of you, if not both, would wind up here.”

“It was?”

“Yes,” she simply replied.

I was having an incredible time digesting what she was saying. My thoughts kept scrambling here and there as new information continued to come in. I didn’t know how to respond, and my thoughts were so loud I just ended up sitting there staring at her. I found myself mesmerized by her eyelashes for a bit. They were very long, and I just sat there watching her blink them occasionally. It was as if they were waving to me in a way. Then what she said suddenly registered.

“You must have so many questions,” she said.

“I’m sorry… Did you say one of us?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

She didn’t reply. She just sat there staring at me with her delicate smile, waiting for me to catch on to what I already knew, but hadn’t admitted to myself yet.

“Me…and Kaleb,” I said softly.

She just nodded.

“For how long?” I asked her.

She smiled. “Since you were both created.”

I didn’t know how to respond. I had heard of soul mates before, but up until this point I believed it was a term that was drudged up from Earth fantasies and stories. I didn’t think that any of us shared any kind of special connection to anyone. I just thought that love was something that blossomed over time through friendships, like the kind I had experienced before on Earth. This is the way most of us here feel. There are tons of love relationships here that have existed for eons, but none of them have ever said anything about being extreme souls or soul mates.

She looked me over, examining my face closely. I’m pretty sure she could tell how I was feeling, because her expression was sympathetic. She took both of my hands into hers, and smiled kindly.
