Amy wiped her tears and grabbed her bag off the bed. She was done being upset. She’d been warned several times that trying to get back before the full moon might not work. Law had been her life for the last few years, and right now she was trying to break the rules to do something she wasn’t even sure she wanted.

So instead, she would be leaving soon to visit London with William and Edmond. She opened the door to find William standing there with his hand raised to knock. “Is it time to leave?”

William held up his satchel. “I was just coming to see if you were still planning to come with us.”

“I wouldn’t miss it.” Amy closed her door behind her, and they met Edmond at his carriage.

A real carriage. It took every ounce of control Amy had not to squeal. She was going to London in style.

William sat across from her with their bags sitting next to them. Amy hadn’t seen him since that mess in the portrait hall and she wanted to do anything she could to wipe away the look of disappointment she’d seen.

“You seem happy this morning,” William said. “You’re not angry you couldn’t leave?”

“No. I mean, I was sad at first, but there were things I’d miss if I left.” Amy stared out the window to hide the blush that crept into her cheeks. It was sometime in the middle of the night that she realized she would have missed him terribly if she’d left. Most of the things she’d done there she could do again. She was supposed to be in England for a few months. There were countless Jane Austen reenactments and fox hunts she could probably join. She could probably find Eloise and Tawnya when they got back as well. But the one thing the future didn’t have was William. And he was the closest friend she’d ever had. It was sad, but it was true.

“Oh? And what would those be?” William tapped his fingers together. “Let me guess. You would be sorely disappointed that you couldn’t beat Thomas at Hearts again.”

Amy held her hands up in surrender. “That’s it. I couldn’t beat anyone else in my time, so I have to do it here.”

William chucked. “I have a feeling you weren’t so bad at cards in your time either.”

“You would be correct. I’ve won a few tournaments.” Amy was relieved that her abrupt change of subject had worked. “How long is the trip to London?”

“A few hours. I imagine it would be faster for you in the future?” William’s wistful look intrigued Amy.

She sat up. “You’re dying to know how it is in the future, aren’t you?”

“I am. But I know that it would be dangerous if I did. I love the exhilaration of having one of my inventions work. Having those things at the tip of the fingers would mean that I would try to figure out how to make them work.”

“That doesn’t mean you have to do it.
