The flight from St. George, Utah, to Boston, Massachusetts, had been a quiet one so far. Kyle had disconnected himself from anything WITSEC could use to find him. He’d purchased burner phones for himself and Rachel. He was wholly alone, trying to keep someone alive with just his own skill set, and he didn’t know if it would be enough. As he sat beside her on the plane, he prayed.

Lord, I need You to work through me. Give me the power, the insight, the knowledge to keep Rachel safe. Help me find who is at the center of deceit within WITSEC so it can be a trusted organization again. Bring Seth Black and anyone who has helped him to trial. I know we don’t always see justice prevail here in our time, but for the sake of humanity, help me end the reign of this madman.

Before he left St. George, he’d secured enough cash to operate off the grid. There were one or two agents he did completely trust—inspectors he knew had turned down a bribe in the past—but he would not reach out for help until he absolutely needed to.

“I know you blame Javier for what happened. For the tracker on your car. For the assault on the hospital,” Rachel said, breaking into his thoughts. “But people will do extreme things to protect their loved ones. If Seth hadn’t saved his daughter after that accident and made Armijo feel like he owed him something on a personal level when he never did, this wouldn’t have happened. It’s Seth’s manipulation that twisted him. Sometimes I feel like we shouldn’t be so hard on people when they’ve been emotionally manipulated to such a degree that they don’t even see themselves anymore.”

He turned to look at her, assessing her. “Was that you? And how you feel about how others judge you?”

Rachel wiped the condensation from the plastic cup she held. “Even very intelligent people can be gullible. Self-deception is the strongest of all defense mechanisms. I’m not saying Javier shouldn’t be held responsible for the things he did in abandoning from the ideal of his job to do the bidding of a mass murderer. But clearly there were mitigating circumstances.”

Kyle stared at her in disbelief—that she could offer such grace to a person who had set her up to be killed. Upon their first meeting in Springdale, she’d been all about exacting justice. Now she seemed to want to deliver more grace than had been afforded to her. He thought through other witnesses he had worked with, and never had he protected one who had such a sense of forgiveness.

“I am amazed by you,” Kyle said, the words slipping out before he could pull them back.

Rachel smiled, shyness causing her to drop her eyes from his. “I don’t know why. You see things like this every day working in the justice system. People making choices they shouldn’t be driven to by extenuating circumstances. People will do lots of wrong things to get control back over their lives.
