Chapter 17

Alice clutched her coffee as if it were a lifeline. They had stayed in a local bed and breakfast above a pub, the beds cheap and uncomfortable. Which meant she spent most of the night tossing and turning, all while she heard strange growling noises from the room next door.

“How can you be so happy in the morning?” she said with a yawn.

Peyton studied the road signs as he drove down a windy road, eyes bright and awake. “Who says I’m happy?”

Alice smirked. “Point taken.”

He lifted an eyebrow, eyeing her coffee until she handed it over with a dramatic frown.

“How is this even coffee?” He grimaced at the flavour.

Alice snatched the paper cup back. “I like it sugary, okay?” She sipped the caramel latte, savouring the taste. “So, where are we going?”

“I called Brady’s contact last night after we arrived. He’s meeting us at the station in about ten. Seems like a cheerful chap.”

“Translation, he seems like an arsehole.”

Peyton smiled, the emotion only lasting a second before he pulled into a side road, the station tucked between two large trees. Kings Garden was a small town in the south west part of England, only a mile from the River Tamar and around two-hundred and fifty from London. Two-hundred and fifty or so miles of Peyton’s passive-aggressive road rage.

They pulled up in one of the free parking spaces, a short man in a dark coat waiting outside with a frown.

“Detective Tallack?” Peyton greeted with a surprising friendliness. “I’m…”

“I know who you are,” Tallack said with a snarl. “I told Brady I don’t appreciate no city folk coming down ‘ere to tell me how to do my job.” His eyes flickered to Alice, the snarl depending. “’Specially with no witch.” He spat the last word.

“How did you know I was a witch?”

“Just do. Now shall we get this over with? Some of us have proper jobs to get back to.” Without a backwards glance he walked into the station, expecting them to follow.

“Wow, he’s friendly,” Alice murmured as she took a step beside Peyton.

“Told you he’s a cheerful chap,” Peyton grunted, his fake smile disappearing along with his overenthusiasm.

“Just through here.” Tallack sat at his desk, impatiently waiting for them to sit across from him. “Come on, I don’t have all day.” His office was a small square space consisting of a desk, three chairs, a filing cabinet and a sad looking plant.

“We appreciate you taking the time to see us this morning, Detective,” Alice began, studying his broad brow and receding hairline. “I…”

“Yeah, yeah,” Tallack snapped. “Here’s the files you wanted.” He slapped down a thick folder, the paper loose inside. “This is a closed case.”

Peyton flipped over the file, studying the photographs while Alice checked out the autopsy report to the first victim.
