* * * *

When Luke came out of the bathroom, she was gone. He was sure of it until he saw her pack by the door, her boots under the table. Pausing in the middle of the room with a towel wrapped around his waist, he surveyed it again. The sun had come up hours ago, and the light coming from the tiny windows in the front of the cabin was more than enough to show that the rumpled covers were kicked to the end of the bed, not hiding her sleeping form there. So where—? Her clothes were gone from beside the bed. He glanced again at her boots under the table. She wasn't outside. There was only one other place she could be. That's when he heard her. Luke grabbed a pair of jeans, pulling them on as quickly as he could. His fingers didn't want to work in the morning and he fumbled with the snap, finally leaving it undone as her sobs grew louder. He had never installed the standard red caution light outside of his darkroom door—there was never anyone else to walk in to disturb him.

"Mia?" The red haze spilled out of the little room and he saw her curled into a corner, clutching the photo in her hand. "Oh fuck. Mia…"

"He ran ahead of me." The picture trembled in her fingers and he glimpsed his son's dark, laughing eyes. "He saw a deer…"

"You don't have to." Luke squatted beside her, reaching for the photo.

She clutched it to her chest, her eyes flashing, accusing. "Why didn't you stop me?"

His jaw clenched and he rested his head in his hands, staring at the floor. What was the right answer? What was the real answer? When did all of the rationalizations he told himself alone in the dark become reality? What if, what if…

He shook his head at her, meeting her eyes. "Why did you go?" She covered her face with the photo, sobbing. Fuck. Why do we do this? "It doesn't matter, Mia. It's… it just doesn't matter."

"It's not over." Kit's smiling face appeared, smeared with his mother's tears, his arms out as if he could fly. Fly, little bird, fly. "It'll never be over. I can't get it out. I can't—"

He pulled her to him and she fought, clenching the picture into her fisted hand and hitting him in the chest. Luke grabbed her wrists, twisting her arms in front of her and pulling her between his thighs as he sat with his back against the wall. He was at least still strong enough to hold her. He rocked as she struggled and cried, leaning his head back, his own tears leaking slowly and silently into his ears as he waited her out.

Finally exhausted, she let herself rest back against him and he loosened his grip, kissing the top of her head. "Don't leave, Mia."

"Don't leave? Oh Luke…" She shook her head and let out a short, strangled laugh. "What else can I do?"

"Stay."

"No."
