COCKTAILS
Being the country of the wine obsessed, it has taken a long time for quality cocktails to make their way to Paris. Fortunately there are now a range of craft cocktail bars to choose from, and the only real dilemma you’ll have is whether to get your cocktail before or after dinner. The French do not usually drink cocktails with their meals because strong liquor and other mixers will overpower the subtle flavours found in most French cooking. Wine is of course the drink of choice to have with meals, which means your cocktails will need to be consumed either side.
It was really the Experimental Cocktail Group (see Grand Pigalle and Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels) that championed the craft cocktail movement in Paris, opening three different bars that offered incredibly unique mixed drinks with quality ingredients. They also did a great job of making their places a bit exclusive with a speakeasy vibe. Sometimes you could walk right past the door, knowing you were looking for the place, and think it must have closed down. Yet just behind a no-nonsense unmarked door is a hip bar packed to the brim and serving some of best craft cocktails in town.
Others have followed suit, and now you can find plenty of options for a pre- or post-dinner drink. Most cocktail bars can be found in the 10th or 11th (where most of the best food is, too), with several more located in the 9th around Pigalle.
