Chapter Eight: Nauseated
âI canât do it anymore. I canât do it at all.â Brooke was all I could think about. Being friends with her didnât make me stop wanting. It wasnât good enough. All I wanted was more of her. Nothing was as important as Brooke. It didnât matter how many obligations I had at work, or how many deadlines there were. It didnât matter how close the opening was. All I could ever think about was Brooke, her beauty, the sweetness of her smile, the surprising freshness of her wit, her skin like milk and sugar.
I had daydreams of showing her the world, of buying her a restaurant, of dressing her up and taking her everywhere. But I couldnât sleep without images of her body, her breasts, the sounds she made when my hands touched her in places no one had ever touched her before, what it felt like to be inside of her, how whole she made me feel, how she completed me, the warmth of her arms around me. How I needed her. âI canât be her friend.â
âDarling, Iâve never seen you like this before. Whatâs the problem. Take her to bed, sheâs texting you all the time. She clearly is just as mad about you as you are about her.â Bette had been in The Hamptons, but now she was back and they were catching up at her favorite nightspot.
âAs friends.â He laughed bitterly and drank his scotch. âShe has a boyfriend. Diego.â He gritted out the name between his teeth. âMy little spy told me they live together.â The bourbon settled unpleasantly in his stomach. How could she have moved in with some other man so soon after the night they had together? Had they already been involved when Brooke came to his bed? Why had she waited for me when she had someone else? None of this felt right.
âYou have a spy?â Bette asked, surprised. âBenjamin, have you been stalking this girl?â
I glared at her. It wasnât my fault that Suze, the pastry chef from Brookeâs restaurant, came by my hotel restaurant with my our pastry chef to help them set up and we got to talking. About Brooke. She had nothing but good things to say about Brooke. It made my obsession with her worse, knowing that I wasnât making up her good qualities.
Then Bette started laughing. âAfter all these years, and all the women who have pursued you like big game hunters, while you stood aloof and unaffected, enlisting me to pretend to be engaged so you never had to commit to any of them, and now youâve been caught. And itâs by a girl who wonât have you.â
âItâs not funny.â
âPoor darling,â she said and patted my cheek just a little too hard. âYou womanizer, you. Youâve been caught in your own trap. How does it feel to be the one who is in love and pining, while the object of your affections remains aloof?â
âNot good at all.â
Bette pierced him with a look over the rim of her martini glass.
