Chapter Thirteen
The nervous quaver in Alexia’s voice gave Jayden pause. But just when she opened her mouth to reply, both of their cell phones rang. Since she finally seemed to be opening up, he wanted to continue the conversation, and considered not taking the call, but the fact that both phones rang at the same time was too coincidental to ignore. “I guess we should see who is calling us.”
Alexia nodded. “I suppose you’re right.” She stood up and grabbed a throw blanket from a nearby chair and hurried to her purse on the kitchen counter and dug out her ringing phone.
Jayden reached for his jeans and reached into his pocket for his own phone. Glancing at the small screen, he saw that it was Colin. “Hey, dude, what’s up?”
“Brianna and I are at Willow Creek Inn about to have a glass of wine. Why don’t you and Alexia join us?” Colin asked in a rather hushed voice.
“A glass of wine? Since when do you drink wine?”
“Shut up. I enjoy a nice glass of merlot now and then. I did live in California, you know.”
Jayden snorted.
“Okay, I started drinking wine since about ten minutes ago. Whatever. Brianna might be under the impression that I enjoyed wine country.”
“Sure, to ride in.”
“Yeah, yeah, a minor detail,” Colin answered, but then laughed. “Dude, cut me some slack.”
“Chill, Colin. I’m just bustin’ your balls.” He glanced over at Alexia, who was chatting away, and he wondered if it was with Brianna. “I have to wonder why you want company. Won’t we cramp your style?”
“Jay, she’s nervous as hell. I thought that maybe you two could, I don’t know. Loosen her up or something.”
“Right, and you’re not nervous? Trying to impress her with a glass of wine when your sorry ass really wants a cold beer.”
“Shut the hell up and get your ass over here so she doesn’t bolt. She went to the bathroom and I swear she might not come back.”
“Why?”
“Beats me. Damn, I’m as laid-back as they come.”
“And just a little bit . . . uh, world famous.”
“What? Come on, like you’re not?”
Jayden scratched his chest. “I’m not an icon the way that you are, Colin.”
“The hell you’re not. You’ve surpassed most of my records and winning streaks. You jackass.”
“Yeah, whatever,” Jayden answered. Technically Colin was right. Jayden had more championship wins under his belt including two straight U.S. Open wins, but Colin McCord was instrumental in making motocross the popular sport that is was today. He was more than just an amazing racer—he had a personality to go along with it. He landed sponsors and television interviews and was once one of People magazine’s hundred sexiest men. He even posed in Playgirl, something he hated to be reminded of, but of course Jayden did every chance he got. “Hey, has Bri ever seen your pic in Playgirl?”
“If you dare tell her, I’ll pound you into the ground,” he growled in a low, hushed voice.
“Okay, but it’ll cost ya.”
“Just shut the hell up and get your ass over here.
