1 tsp. sugar

½ oz. fresh lemon juice

PATRONAGES | Cats, gardeners, the mentally ill, mice and rats, travelers

Come up with clever ways of combining all of Gertrude’s patronages for a party, such as an Irish mouse dressed for a funeral and carrying flowers about to mount a horse. We’re confident that you’ll get nothing but approving looks from any baker you ask to put that image on a cake. And be sure to accompany every round, especially the last one, with the following toast: “To the love of St. Gertrude: may it protect us from all harm on all of our journeys.”
