We find Vornas in the main chamber, his sleek back facing us as he sets the last of the fruit onto a makeshift plate of leaves on the center of the floor. Three camera drones buzz around us as we close the distance, and I canât help but think that the producers must be giddily wringing their hands, hoping for some juicy drama. I just hope the two rivals can keep things civil.
Vornasâs tail swishes behind him as he turns and smiles at us. âAh! You have come after all. Please, have a seat.â He waves a clawed hand over the leaves as he sits across from where we would join him.
Draven eyes him closely as we both sit down, and thereâs a long silence as the two lock eyes, their aggressively swishing tails the only noise to be heard. But eventually, Draven turns to look at the food on display in front of us and asks, âAnd how should we eat this?â
Vornas doesnât hesitate as he explains, âWell, Iâve already tenderized them and removed the outer skins, which is the hardest part of preparation. Now, you simply poke a hole into the inner skin andâ¦â He demonstrates as he wrings the fruitâs juices into his mouth, then smacks his lips victoriously. âDelicious!â He then gestures to the plate. âPlease. Try for yourselves.â
Draven nods slowly as he takes one and presses a claw into it, though his gaze never leaves Vornas. After taking a sip, a look of surprise crosses his face as he sets the fruit down. âHm,â is all he offers as a verdict.
Vornas frowns and leans forward. âThat is it? Do you Drakari have no taste buds at all? Or is it that you prefer to crunch on rocks?â
Draven curls his lips in annoyance, but he says nothing. I decide to cut in by sampling the plyput myself, just as Vornas demonstrated. Sure enough, itâs sweet and juicy, like a tropical melon mixed with a citrus fruit. Itâs unquestioningly delicious. âI think it tastes wonderful,â I say between sips, before pausing and looking at it, already feeling a bit of a buzz. âWait. Is it fermented?â
âBut of course!â Vornas declares, then has himself another one. âGet your big dumb walking rock to drink some more. Then maybe he will loosen up.â
Draven grumbles, âIâm not one to drown my sorrows, you ball of fur.â
Wow. And here I would have expected such feared warlords to have far nastier insults to fling at each other. âPerhaps we should talk about something besides our differences,â I suggest as I grab another plyput, already craving more. âAfter all, weâre all in the same boat here.â
Vornas stretches and leans back as he glances up at the radiant gemstone heart of the mother tree. âI quite prefer our differences,â he muses. âI much prefer my trees to the Drakariâs canyons or the Aquariansâ waters.â He turns his eyes to me. âDid you know our captors stole this very sapling from my jungle many years ago?â
âYes.
