Fifty yards distant, the white-suited man in a matching fedora sat by himself at a table in an outdoor café. Deeply tanned beneath graying white hair, trim but not overly fit for his age and puffing on a thin cigar, he could have easily been taken as a middle class expatriate living high on his American money, come to the square for his lunch.

But if Manny had taken the time to look, he might have also recognized the unassuming look of an experienced operator staring into the screen of a laptop on the table in front of him, the man’s fingers dancing across the keyboard like they were manipulating air.

“More coffee, señor?”

The waiter spoke impeccable English. But English was hardly needed. Jon Ripley was fluent in Spanish as well as nine other languages, not to mention a couple of obscure Himalayan dialects he’d picked up years before while living in Asia.

“No, gracias. Me he hartado.”

“Muy bien, señor.”

The waiter had assumed the man was another journalist, a stringer perhaps, or even a reporter from one of the big American news organizations. What the waiter couldn’t see was that Ripley’s laptop was equipped with a special filter so that no one around him could make out the slightest hint of what he was staring at on his screen. Or that the innocent-looking sunglasses the gringo wore—so common in this sun-drenched part of the world—were anything but normal glasses.
