Chapter 7

Long hours had passed since Dragon’s Elite 4 had assumed a stable position in the orbit of Lisa TF. Data and video files from a dozen of drones they sent to fly over the planet were continuously steaming in. They took a large conference room next to the bridge and turned it into a full war room, with screens of video feeds and information processing screens and a long oval table that could seat twenty people.

Four of them, Branden, OO Sunny, TC Rihanna and Samovan were there almost around the clock, and after grueling long hours of examining everything they could, they called the rest of the team to join them for an update.

“The planet is actually in one exceptionally good shape,” their TC started the briefing as they all quietly set down. “Everything seems stable. The atmosphere is completely breathable; the vegetation is thick. It seems everything is in good shape.”

“You can see how green it is. It is incredible that just a hundred years ago it looked like any bare space rock.”

“Good… So, it will be as easy as we hoped then.” Zetra said with relief and satisfaction.

But Tommy Boy’s eyes drifted to the screen Branden zeroed in.

“And what is that you are showing us, Branden?”

“At first we thought it was a leftover remnant of terraforming equipment. But it’s not.”

“What is it then?”

“It’s a missile battery. That’s what it is. Pretty standard thing. And it has been planted there very recently. Look at the tracks of the vehicles that placed them there.”

“Shit, those tracks look rather fresh, but we’ll put that in CPU and see what comes out.”

“Yeah, so what is up with that? And, if there is one, you can bet, there are more of them,” Branden said in a sober voice, waiting for the information to sink in with all of them. Then he pulled out the image and stats of the automatic-detection missiles that the army has been known to use and float it in the air above everyone’s head so they all can make sure that what he was saying is the truth.

“It is, most of the time used to act like a booby trap. Fully automated, it has a scanner inside and as soon as the scanner identifies one of its targets, it sends arrays of missiles to its target.”

“And how do you know it was set here for us?”

“Maybe it was not set here for us. But, do you seriously believe that we are the first team to come to this planet and check out what is going on with it?”

“No,” Zetra answered instinctively, but then as she understood what she implied added, “Well, I do not know. How certain are we of anything?”

“Well, there are things that actually we do know…”

“Okay, like what?”

“Look, I tried to find anything I could about this planet. And has been drawing just blanks. The only thing I could get my hands on is that it was deemed habitable and suitable for terraforming due to its size and proximity to its star.
