Chapter 11

Metamorphosis

Dawn

The moment I hit the loading bay and women come spilling out of one of the shuttles, I pick up my pace because I see friendly faces. Amber comes bouncing out first and then June, followed by a half dozen more women. There are eight in total.

Crystal split all the single women among the four ships present today, which makes sense. Women who have been vaccinated against the Vithacan parasites are seen as rare and precious among the males in this sector of space. I can see how the commanders wouldn’t want all their eggs in one basket, so to speak.

I don’t know why Amber and June volunteered to relocate to our ship. Perhaps they wanted to be with me. We are pretty close. It could be that they just wanted to get away from Crystal and her never-ending pushing for us to do things we didn’t want to do. Glancing around, I realize it could be because our ship is newer, faster and safer. Then again, they might have just wanted a change of scenery. No matter their reason, I’m thrilled they came.

Some of the others are ones I remember from being on the aquatic vessel before we were rescued. The Draconians also rescued a handful of women on the planet before it exploded. Much like us, they are a hot mess and unsure if this was a real rescue and if it is, what it means for them. They require a lot of reassurance that they’re truly free and will be well cared for.

We decide to pair each of them up with a partner who is more familiar with Draconian cultural norms. Since the queen’s chamber on this ship is filled with Hian’s family and this sleek modern ship is quite spacious, Carrok arranges for them to have individual quarters.

Just when we’re about to show them to their rooms, the klaxons sound off. The new women begin to panic. Carrok rushes over. “The battle sequence has begun. I must ask you to take a seat and secure yourselves safely. You can keep abreast of the battle on the viewing screens along with the warriors in this area.”

Sure enough, we’re forced into sturdy seats with safety harnesses. It’s super weird sitting there with nothing to do but watch the battle taking place on one of the huge viewing screens scattered around the cavernous space. Clearly the males around us would want to see how the battle plays out and be ready in case they need to scramble the fighters neatly lined up in several long rows in the back of the bay. It feels vaguely like sitting in a movie theatre watching a science fiction movie, only it isn’t entertaining because our lives literally hang in the balance.

The moment I’m released from the safety harness, one of the warriors comes to me. I quickly glance around to discover that Carrok is missing. “Do you mind if I ask where Elder Carrok got off to?”

“Elder Carrok went to the nursery to help calm our young.
