Kenzie turned her back on Cole, trying to calm the rage threatening to burst forth. Maybe she should give him the benefit of the doubt. This was America, after all. Innocent until proven guilty. Maybe his claims were true—he’d just fallen into this whole thing and wanted to help. And maybe he hadn’t been up to no good back in Texas with Allison what’s-her-name—

Yeah, right.

But she still needed to breathe deeply and speak calmly. That way the emergency dispatcher would be able to understand her when she told them to drag Cole Leighton to jail and throw away the key. The dirty, no-good, low-down—

The calm thing wasn’t working. Kenzie whirled to face him. “It’s been you all along, hasn’t it. Stalking me, bugging my house, messing with my car. Taking pictures of my scars, of my students?” She got in his face, dug her fingers into his sinewy arm.

He could mess with her—scare her out of her mind. It wasn’t that hard to send her cowering into a corner, but this time he’d gone too far. Nobody messed with her kids. No one.

“And now—swooping in here just in time to save me once again. You knew I got those pictures today, didn’t you? Because you delivered them yourself.” She jerked her hand away from his hot flesh and paced faster. “What kind of telescopic lens do you have, anyway? And where do you hide your van? Or did you just borrow it for the day from your island friend?”

He held up both hands.

No. No more stopping. No more sitting on the sidelines as a helpless victim, waiting to see what terrible thing would happen next.

“And what about the girl from Texas? Allison, was that her name? Yeah, I heard. Did she die too quickly, and you decided that was no fun, so now…”

Cole’s face went deathly white.

The anger whooshed out of Kenzie nearly as fast. She’d gone too far. Whether or not he was the enemy, she’d said too much.

Cole’s eyes were nearly closed, blocking access to his thoughts. Without a word, he gently set his packages on the ground, rose and walked away.

Collapsing against the car bumper, Kenzie stared back at the school. Her insides felt as if they had been carved out, leaving her an empty shell.

Was that what she’d just done to Cole?
