They’d arranged to meet Rawlgeeb back at the office, so after a hurried meal, Vince walked back with Brent, the two men deep in conversation. And despite his worst fears, Vince started to feel a little better.

Instead of mocking Vince and pouring derision on his bruised and battered pride, Brent actually seemed quite concerned, staying quiet most of the time and only asking questions where necessary. And when Vince explained about Kate, and how he’d been whisked away to the headquarters of a rebel group working within GIT, Brent let out a low whistle.

“That’s some story, Vince. Now I know why I had a visit from an angry Gloabon. He snuck up on me in the office and whacked me with a stun rod. He wanted to know all about you. Nasty little sucker. Cold-blooded.”

Vince winced. “You shouldn’t say that, Brent. It makes you sound like one of those anti-Gloabon guys.”

“Relax. I’m not being a bigot. I mean the guy was a stone-cold killer. Rawlgeeb thinks he was some kind of spook, sent from The Gamulon to track you down.”

“My God. It just gets worse.”

“Welcome to my world,” Brent drawled. “I guess you’re all grown up now, Vince. I turn my back for five minutes and what do you do? You dive right into the hottest water you can find.”

“I know,” Vince said. “It all started with Squernshall. I was desperate to get off that station, but even so, I can’t believe I let him drag me into this. I’ve been so stupid.”

“Don’t be so hard on yourself. You were in a tight spot, and when it comes to pushing people around, our Gloabon friends are in a league of their own.”

Vince hesitated, waiting for the other shoe to drop, but Brent walked along quietly, staring pensively into the middle distance, so Vince said, “Thanks for being so…understanding.”

“Well, I know how these things go, and God knows I’ve been in plenty of tight corners myself. I hate to sound like a wise old PI handing out advice, but sometimes, when you open a can of worms, all you get is worms, and that’s not nice if you’re expecting peaches.” He nodded thoughtfully, patting Vince on the back before adding, “Remember this, kiddo, it’s always darkest before the dawn of the dead.”

“I don’t think you have that saying right,” Vince suggested, but Brent shot him a look.

“You weren’t there, kid. You weren’t there.”

Vince found himself smiling, feeling lighter. It was good to get his worries off his chest, and though talking to Brent had its sticky moments, it was a whole lot better than confessing to Maisie. He couldn’t bear that look she got in her eyes when he goofed something up. Oh, Vince, her pitying gaze seemed to say. How could you?

“Penny for them,” Brent said, stopping suddenly on the street.

Vince halted, shaking his head. “Not a good bargain at the moment, believe me.”

Brent shrugged. “Fine. I don’t have any cash anyway, and I’m not sure IOUs are legal tender for the purchase of thoughts.
