Chapter 13
Colm
Jace sticks her tongue out the side of her mouth when she concentrates. She hums too. Each little thing goes into a box inside my head Iâve dubbed Jaceisms. Each one makes me grin.
The work tonight went even later than expected, but there is a snag on some of the measurements and what the project manager has planned with building materials.
âJace, what sides do you want for the takeaway?â I ask, covering my mouthpiece with my hand.
âTakeout.â
I scoff. âIs it really that different?â
âNo, but itâs so fun throwing your little Irish terms off.â
I grin and point at the phone still pressed to my ear. âWhat dâya want?â
âNoodles. Double noodles.â
I take my hand off. âAnd extra lo mein.â
I wrap up the order, then return to sit beside her on my couch. Somewhere in the discomfort of the office, when we realized this might be a long-haul night, we decided to take the work home. Pays to be neighbors.
âTheir delivery guy isnât there, so Iâll need to go pick it up.â
âOh,â she says. âI can do that.â
âNo,â I say lightly. âYou look like youâre onto something. But I tend to get a lot of work calls at night, so I might ask you to play assistant while Iâm gone. Itâll save me from long-winded voicemails. and I canât take calls while Iâm driving. I become a wee bit of a hazard.â
âHmm, trusting me in your house alone.â
âDo you plan on rummaging through my drawers?â
âOh, definitely.â
âYouâll be disappointed. Nothing to see.â
âI doubt that.â
I scoff, and before I can stop my blasted hand, I pat her knee. Jace glances at my palm (which I pull back immediately), but instead of screaming at me, it almost seems as if she leans into the touch. Jace winks and pats my leg. I know sheâs trying to ease my disquiet, but my body clenches, in a good way. This is becoming too easy, spending time with Jace. Letting down my guard. Sometimes I want to give in and invite her in on some of the burdens. She seems like the sort of person whoâd have good advice. But Iâve learned enough to know most people run from the hard things. And my backgroundâitâs one turbulent storm after the other.
Iâm not even staying here permanently. There is no reason to get attached to anyone.
I let out a nervous breath and stand. âIâll be right back.â
âIâll answer your phone and tell them all sorts of lies.â
âIâd expect nothing less.â
Strange to leave Jace in my house, yet at the same time, itâs almost natural. The Chinese restaurant isnât far and Iâm gone for a total of twenty minutes. I donât like a lot of greasy food, but Jace insists Iâll make an exception for this place. She placed a wager for ten snow cones if I hate it. No one would turn down a bet for snow cones, so Iâll try greasy noodles and lie if theyâre delicious.
I never said Iâd play fair.
Once Iâm inside, Jace is no longer on the couch.
