Chapter 13

Colm

Jace sticks her tongue out the side of her mouth when she concentrates. She hums too. Each little thing goes into a box inside my head I’ve dubbed Jaceisms. Each one makes me grin.

The work tonight went even later than expected, but there is a snag on some of the measurements and what the project manager has planned with building materials.

“Jace, what sides do you want for the takeaway?” I ask, covering my mouthpiece with my hand.

“Takeout.”

I scoff. “Is it really that different?”

“No, but it’s so fun throwing your little Irish terms off.”

I grin and point at the phone still pressed to my ear. “What d’ya want?”

“Noodles. Double noodles.”

I take my hand off. “And extra lo mein.”

I wrap up the order, then return to sit beside her on my couch. Somewhere in the discomfort of the office, when we realized this might be a long-haul night, we decided to take the work home. Pays to be neighbors.

“Their delivery guy isn’t there, so I’ll need to go pick it up.”

“Oh,” she says. “I can do that.”

“No,” I say lightly. “You look like you’re onto something. But I tend to get a lot of work calls at night, so I might ask you to play assistant while I’m gone. It’ll save me from long-winded voicemails. and I can’t take calls while I’m driving. I become a wee bit of a hazard.”

“Hmm, trusting me in your house alone.”

“Do you plan on rummaging through my drawers?”

“Oh, definitely.”

“You’ll be disappointed. Nothing to see.”

“I doubt that.”

I scoff, and before I can stop my blasted hand, I pat her knee. Jace glances at my palm (which I pull back immediately), but instead of screaming at me, it almost seems as if she leans into the touch. Jace winks and pats my leg. I know she’s trying to ease my disquiet, but my body clenches, in a good way. This is becoming too easy, spending time with Jace. Letting down my guard. Sometimes I want to give in and invite her in on some of the burdens. She seems like the sort of person who’d have good advice. But I’ve learned enough to know most people run from the hard things. And my background—it’s one turbulent storm after the other.

I’m not even staying here permanently. There is no reason to get attached to anyone.

I let out a nervous breath and stand. “I’ll be right back.”

“I’ll answer your phone and tell them all sorts of lies.”

“I’d expect nothing less.”

Strange to leave Jace in my house, yet at the same time, it’s almost natural. The Chinese restaurant isn’t far and I’m gone for a total of twenty minutes. I don’t like a lot of greasy food, but Jace insists I’ll make an exception for this place. She placed a wager for ten snow cones if I hate it. No one would turn down a bet for snow cones, so I’ll try greasy noodles and lie if they’re delicious.

I never said I’d play fair.

Once I’m inside, Jace is no longer on the couch.
