Sorren watched the tubes of the commercial air blowers being plugged into apertures in the kilns’ bases.

They were feeding larger branches into them now, because the kilns were no longer two metres across, they were now five. Nothing had been built onto them, they were simply growing from the inside. Sorren shuddered. She tried not to get any closer to them than she had to.

With the new hand tools, the excavation of the seam proceeded at a faster rate. They were now undercutting a fair overhang of rock in places, as the black, glassy ore with the embedded nodules was removed. The ore was brought to Robson for sorting on the grading table. Rusty sat underneath, observing the proceedings with interest.

As Robson surveyed the progress, he wondered if he should not send a team to cut props for the deeper sections… but something kept telling him to wait until they were deeper still. A work team cutting props would cause delay, and that could not be allowed, because… The work was essential for Arden, because…

There was a deadline to be met – that was it. He just wished he could remember why.
