then quickly introduced themselves before they could start giggling.
The three of them sipped tea in silence for a few moments after that. The wind breathed cold air over their faces.
Finally Maddie said, ‘We need to be honest. We’ve come a long way to speak to you, and I have to tell you the truth. A friend of ours took something from you, and he’s died as a result. I was nearly killed.’
King George nodded. ‘I thought it was like that. We have suffered this too.
Four of us died, and some others were taken back to China. When your friend took. . . what he took, he was foolish and greedy.’
Maddie nodded. ‘I know.’
‘So why are you here? You live in England, yes? You are safe there.’
‘No we’re not,’ snapped Fitz. ‘That’s where the killings happened.’
The lama got up abruptly, walked into the shed. They heard him speaking in another language, rapidly, heard a few soft replies.

Their leader, who we will call Hin-Dali, decided that their path had ended and they must die. He told the lamas that they had been led to the high mountains to reach nirvana. So they sat down at the base of the ice river, in the most beautiful place, and awaited their end.
‘Then they saw a mist! Imagine their feelings, when they saw a mist above the ice – and smelled the air of growing things, of soil! Hin-Dali feared an illusion, and was reluctant to let anyone seek the source of this miracle, but some of the younger monks were eager to live, and they went anyway.
‘And so they found the valley, and found in it a place between three tall stones, where the earth was warm and small flowers grew. They called it Om-Tsor, which in their dialect meant the Miracle Flower.
‘Perhaps they ate the flowers because they were hungry – there can have been little enough for them to eat. Anyway, they ate them. And they found that they could walk tall, tall among the mountains as if they were of the mountains themselves. They could move rocks the size of a house, carve the 82
